Why watch a screen at church!? I could watch a TV sermon at home! #churchtiktok #church #playingchurch
In my experience attending church services, I've noticed a growing presence of video screens used to display sermons, lyrics, and church announcements. While technology can enhance worship by providing clear visuals and supporting multimedia presentations, it can also introduce a disconnect for some attendees. For example, some people feel that watching a screen during service detracts from the personal and communal aspects of worship. When a sermon is delivered live without visual aids, the focus often remains on the speaker’s presence, the ambient atmosphere, and the shared experience among the congregation. However, when a large screen commands attention, it sometimes makes the service feel more like watching a TV broadcast than participating in a communal worship. I recall a particular service where after about 45 minutes, some attendees, including myself, felt 'over it'—a phrase capturing the fatigue or disinterest sparked by prolonged screen viewing in a sacred setting. The feeling was that the digital presentation overshadowed the spiritual connection and made the experience less engaging. On the other hand, watching sermons at home on TV or online offers flexibility and comfort, allowing viewers to pause, reflect, or re-watch parts of the message, which some find beneficial. This flexibility is not usually available in live church services. Balancing technology in church requires thoughtful consideration of its impact on worshipers. Some congregations now experiment with integrating screens in ways that complement rather than dominate the service, such as using them sparingly for scripture readings or interactive elements. Ultimately, individual preferences vary greatly. While screens can enrich worship for many, others seek a more traditional experience free from digital distractions. Recognizing and respecting these differences can help church leaders design services that welcome a diverse range of worship styles and deepen the spiritual engagement for all attendees.
