My go-to activity when the power goes out, especially on a chilly, icy night, is always a good old-fashioned ghost story. Gather everyone around a flickering candle or a flashlight, pull out some cozy blankets, and let your imagination run wild. The darkness itself adds to the atmosphere! We’ve had some of our best laughs and shivers telling tales of things that go bump in the night. And speaking of flashlights, don't forget shadow puppets! It's incredible how much fun you can have with just your hands and a light source. We've created entire plays on our living room wall, from barking dogs to flying birds and even a few silly monsters. It's super simple, requires no power, and brings out the inner kid in everyone. Board Games & Card Game Tournaments When was the last time you truly focused on a board game without digital distractions? A power outage is the perfect excuse! I once used a power outage to try making some simple, no-bake energy balls using ingredients like oats, peanut butter, and shredded coconut I had in the pantry – a surprisingly fun and tasty activity! You could even challenge yourselves to find simple household items, like an old apple blower (if you happen to have one for crafts or decorations), and see what kind of creative games or art you can come up with using them. Outdoor Adventures (If Safe!) & Stargazing If it's safe to venture outside – and only if it's safe, especially when it's icy – a short walk can be refreshing. However, if the icy conditions make it too risky, you can still enjoy the outdoors from inside. If the clouds clear, the lack of light pollution during a blackout makes it an ideal time for stargazing! Bundle up, grab a blanket, and look out the window, or step onto a safe porch or balcony.
