How I Got Through a Power Outage as Someone with Celiac Disease

Last week, my area in Michigan was struck by some pretty bad storms (including a tornado). I was caught completely off guard so here’s how I survived my first power outage having celiac: Chick-fil-a

Without having the ability to cook any meals I was pretty stuck. Luckily a town not too far away had power so I was able to get food. This experience made me realize how hard it can be to get safe food during an event like a power outage. It also made me realize how underprepared I was 😅

Fellow celiacs, what do you do when there’s a power outage? How can I try to prepare myself for weather events like these?

... Read moreLiving with celiac disease during a power outage presents unique challenges, especially when access to safe, gluten-free foods becomes limited. After experiencing a tornado-induced power outage in Michigan, I quickly realized the importance of preparation beyond my everyday routine. One of my key takeaways was the value of keeping a small emergency stash of non-perishable gluten-free foods. Items like gluten-free granola bars, rice cakes, canned beans, and nuts can be lifesavers when cooking isn't an option. These foods are easy to store and have a long shelf life, making them ideal for unexpected situations. Another helpful strategy is to identify nearby restaurants or stores that offer reliable gluten-free options and remain open during emergencies. In my case, I was fortunate that a nearby town with power still had Chick-fil-A open—a restaurant known for its gluten-free waffle fries and certified gluten-free menu items. Having a mental list of such safe spots is crucial. It's also beneficial to invest in a small cooler with ice packs as part of your emergency kit to keep perishable gluten-free items fresh longer, should you lose power for multiple days. Additionally, keeping a battery-powered or hand-crank radio can help you stay informed about power restoration updates and community resources. Connecting with local celiac support groups can provide invaluable advice tailored to your area’s resources. They might share insights on emergency preparedness, including which grocery stores stock gluten-free canned or ready-to-eat meals. Lastly, having clear communication with family or neighbors about your dietary needs ensures they can assist if needed during such crises. Sharing your precautions and emergency plan empowers those around you to help effectively. Through this experience, I learned that while power outages pose challenges, thoughtful preparation focusing on safe gluten-free food options and community support can greatly ease the stress and health risks.
