Spiritual identity theft is a real issue, and it's not about passwords. It's about someone stealing your lineage.
It occurs when individuals:
• Claim traditions they were never rooted in.
• Erase the communities that originated the practice.
• Rename ancestral systems to make them marketable.
• Profit from knowledge while excluding its descendants.
Cultural exchange is valid, but cultural erasure is a distinct problem. For example, Hoodoo emerged from Black American survival, resistance, and adaptation, deeply connected to the experiences of slavery and displacement. You cannot separate this practice from its people.
Spiritual identity theft happens when:
• Someone adopts the aesthetic without honoring the history.
• Someone teaches the work without acknowledging its origin.
• Someone profits while the source community is silenced.
This is appropriation, not appreciation.
To be clear:
• Learning is not theft.
• Respect is not theft.
• Working within the proper context is not theft.
However, claiming ownership over what was never yours to begin with is theft. Hoodoo doesn't need gatekeeping; it needs acknowledgment.
If you engage with a tradition, honor those who kept it alive. If you speak on it, speak truthfully about its origins. If you benefit from it, do not erase its roots.
Ancestral work is about continuity, not a costume.

From my experience and observations, it deeply affects communities whose ancestral knowledge and practices have been commodified or misrepresented. For example, the Hoodoo tradition is rooted in Black American history and resilience, intertwined with the realities of slavery and displacement. When outsiders adopt Hoodoo merely as an aesthetic or profit-making tool without honoring its origins, they contribute to a harmful erasure of the culture and history it embodies. In many contemporary spiritual circles, people might unknowingly engage in spiritual identity theft by neglecting to give credit to the communities that preserved these ancestral systems. This not only disrespects those who kept these traditions alive through generations but also distorts the meaningful continuity these practices hold. It is crucial to distinguish between cultural exchange, which is based on mutual respect and acknowledgment, and appropriation, which often involves erasing or rewriting histories for personal gain. Personally, I have encountered instances where the true essence of ancestral work became diluted because practitioners either bypassed the originating communities or taught these systems without truthful context. This misuse fosters misunderstanding and can cause harm to descendants of those original cultures by silencing their voices and experiences. Ultimately, engaging with any spiritual tradition should be done with honesty, respect, and an understanding of its historical and cultural foundations. Learning, respecting, and properly contextualizing ancestral practices is not theft—it is honoring a legacy. However, claiming ownership or commercializing what is not rightfully yours disrupts that legacy and harms the connected communities. Spiritual identity theft is real and must be addressed through conscious awareness, acknowledgment, and respectful practice to uphold the dignity and continuity of ancestral spiritual work.
Naw we need to gatekeep it. They already trying to erase our history and putting false narratives out about our people. Why? Because of their jealousy and hatred. History has revealed that not gatekeeping things has backfired. They do not seek to learn because all they know ihow to do is steal.
