My kid learned how to swim for free here.

Hey NYC mamas!

The city offers FREE year-round swim classes for ALL ages. My kiddo just passed Level 1, and I’m spilling ALL to boost your odds!

🗓️ Spring 2025 Timeline

1. Apply NOW through 4/24.

2. Results out 4/29.

3. Water test 4/31-5/5 (They’ll check if your kid actually floats ).

4. Classes run 5/6 to 6/22.

Tips for Applying:

1. Search “NYC Parks Learn to Swim”, pick a pool.

2. Be honest about skill level: Level 1 = “needs floaties,” Level 3 = “can doggy paddle 10ft.”

3. Apply to MULTIPLE locations! We got into Flushing Meadow Pool on our 2nd try.

Classes are no joke with 50% pass rate! My kid’s group had 12 kids, 5 moved up.

... Read moreHey fellow NYC mamas! I was so thrilled to share our success with the NYC Parks free swim program, and I wanted to add a bit more detail to help even more of you navigate this fantastic opportunity. As an NYC parent, I know how crucial and often expensive swimming lessons can be. That's why these free classes are such a game-changer – not just a 'free event,' but a genuine pathway to a life-saving skill in a city surrounded by water! Let’s talk a bit more about the skill levels. The article mentioned Level 1 for 'needs floaties' and Level 3 for 'can doggy paddle 10ft.' In my experience, being really honest during the application for the 'Learn To Swim' program is key. If your little one truly needs floaties and has zero water comfort, Level 1 is perfect. It often starts with basic water acclimatization, blowing bubbles, and getting comfortable submerging their face. They’ll learn foundational skills in a safe, controlled indoor swimming pool environment. Level 2 might build on that with assisted floating and kicking, while Level 3 is where they begin to string strokes together without much help. The adult instructors are amazing at assessing and guiding the kids through each stage. You might be wondering about that 'water test.' It sounds intimidating, but it's really just a friendly assessment to ensure your child is placed in the most appropriate group. For Level 1, they might simply ask if your child can put their face in the water or kick a little. Don't worry if they're nervous – the staff are used to it! It’s less about performing perfectly and more about understanding their current comfort level. Once enrolled, what’s class like? Our classes were typically 45 minutes to an hour, held in a well-maintained indoor swimming pool. The ratio of adult instructors to kids felt good, ensuring everyone got attention. They use fun, engaging activities to teach skills, often incorporating games. My biggest tip for success during the program is consistency. Make sure your child attends every class. Also, encourage them to listen to the instructors and practice any 'homework' they might get, like blowing bubbles in the bathtub. This dedication really helps them build confidence and progress. And what happens after Level 1? That’s the exciting part! Successfully passing a level means your child is ready to advance. The NYC Parks program is structured to help kids progress through various stages until they become proficient swimmers. It's not just a one-off class; it's a comprehensive program. Many pools offer multiple levels, so you can continue building on their skills year after year, completely free! Keep an eye on the application windows for subsequent sessions to re-enroll. This program is truly one of the hidden gems among NYC free events. It provides quality swimming lessons that would otherwise cost a fortune, taught by dedicated adult instructors in great facilities. So, if you're an NYC mama contemplating it, I urge you to apply! It’s an investment in your child’s safety and a fantastic skill they’ll carry for life. Good luck, and I hope to hear about your success stories soon!
