Should I keep trying?

Today I’m feeling that mix of hope and heartache, my rescued dog still won’t let me touch him even after 2 years of loving him. I can’t begin to imagine the abuse he endured before I found him but it left him terrified of human hands.

For two years, I’ve cried with frustration and worked tirelessly to help him feel safe. I’ve taken it slow: quiet days, consistent routines, gentle voices, and never pushing him. He eats well now, sleeps soundly in his crate, and even plays with other dogs at the park. But when I reach out to pet him? He shrinks back, ears flattened, like he’s waiting for the worst.

Humans failed him so badly and it breaks my heart that trust is still so hard for him. He deserves all the love and safety in the world, and I’m determined to keep showing up even if it takes another 2 years (or more). Have you ever loved someone (or a pet) who struggled to trust you? Any advice?

... Read moreHaving a rescued dog that still won’t let you pet him after two years is a challenging but not uncommon situation. Trauma and abuse from a dog’s past can deeply affect their ability to trust humans, especially when it comes to physical contact. It’s important to remember that healing from such deep fear takes time and consistent effort. One key approach is to respect the dog’s boundaries and avoid forcing affection. When your dog shrinks away or flattens his ears, he’s signaling stress and discomfort. Instead of pushing to touch him, try to foster positive associations with your presence through low-pressure interactions. For example, you can sit quietly nearby while offering treats, speak softly, or engage in play that doesn’t require direct petting. Creating a consistent routine is essential because dogs find safety and reassurance in predictability. Feeding, walking, and playtime should happen at regular times so the dog knows what to expect. A calm, quiet environment also helps reduce anxiety; loud noises and sudden movements might worsen the fear. Over time, as trust builds, you might introduce slow, gentle attempts at touch, like softly offering a hand to sniff or petting the side of his body rather than reaching for the head initially. Praise and reward any small signs of comfort with treats or affection. Patience is crucial—progress may be gradual. Connecting with a professional dog behaviorist or trainer who specializes in trauma can also provide tailored strategies to improve your dog’s comfort and trust. They can guide you in reading your dog’s body language and adjusting your approach accordingly. Ultimately, your continued love and determination show your dog that humans can be safe and kind. Keep celebrating small victories and remember that your rescued dog’s journey toward trust is unique. Your empathy and persistence make all the difference in helping him heal.

patience is key. if your dog wants to be alone let them GPT actually told me to never commit to a relationship you have zero control over. because love is like a hobby. because it won't last forever it's only temporary.

Keep trying. I have a Great Dane. For five years he was standoffish. Now he won't leave me alone. Lots of snacks and ensure pupper is neutered. That calms them down a lot.
