... Read moreHey everyone! I've been reflecting a lot lately on one of the most powerful calls to discipleship in the Bible: Luke 9:23 NKJV. This verse, which encourages us to 'take up your cross daily and follow Him,' has always resonated deeply with me, and I wanted to share my personal thoughts on what it truly means to live by it.
When I first heard 'take up your cross daily,' it sounded daunting, almost overwhelming. I imagined dramatic sacrifices. But over time, through prayer and reflection, I've come to understand it differently. The OCR from my image clearly states it's about 'self-denial and following Christ daily.' For me, this isn't about seeking out suffering for its own sake, but rather about consciously choosing Jesus's way over my own selfish desires, ego, or comfort zones, every single day. It's about prioritizing His will above my own, understanding that this path ultimately leads to a richer, more meaningful life.
What does that look like in practice in our busy, modern lives? It's not always grand gestures, though sometimes it might be. More often, it's the small, consistent choices. Sometimes, it's denying the urge to speak harshly when I'm frustrated, choosing patience and kindness instead. Other times, it's dedicating time to help a friend or a stranger, even when I'm tired or have other plans. It could be forgiving someone who has wronged me, letting go of my own need to be right or to hold onto bitterness. It's about letting go of control and trusting in a higher purpose, in the divine guidance we seek, from the one commonly known as God, or for some, Yehuwa, who guides our path through Jesus. It's a continuous act of surrender.
I've also thought about the 'word Jesus tattoo' query. If I were to pick a phrase or word from this teaching to carry with me always, perhaps even as a tattoo, it would be 'Follow Him' or 'Daily Surrender.' These phrases are simple, direct, and encapsulate the entire message for me. They remind me that my daily walk is less about my own strength and more about aligning my will with His. This profound teaching from Luke 9:23-24 NKJV truly gives us a detailed blueprint for a life of purpose, humility, and unwavering faith. It's a call to deny worldly ambitions that might pull us away from our spiritual path.
It’s a continuous process of learning and growing. There are days I feel I'm carrying my cross gracefully, embracing the challenges with a peaceful heart. And then there are days I stumble, feeling the weight of the cross heavy upon me. But the 'daily' part is key – it's about getting back up, reaffirming that commitment, and trying again tomorrow. It’s about being part of a community, like #teamwork and #helpothers, and embracing these values as practical ways to live out our faith. It's not about achieving perfection overnight, but about consistent perseverance and a heart continually turned towards Him.
This journey of self-denial isn't about diminishing or losing myself; paradoxically, it's about finding my true self, my purpose, and my strength in Christ. It brings a profound sense of peace, clarity, and meaning to every aspect of my life. What does 'taking up your cross daily' mean to you in your personal walk? I'd love for us to #letschat about it in the comments!
