Miscarriage Awareness

... Read moreExperiencing an early miscarriage is an incredibly isolating and heartbreaking journey, one that often comes with unexpected physical and emotional challenges. I remember the confusion and fear when I started noticing changes, especially around 5 weeks. It’s hard enough to process what’s happening, but then you encounter those well-meaning, yet hurtful, comments like, "At least it was early on." This phrase, while perhaps intended to comfort, often invalidates the profound grief that can accompany even the earliest loss. It’s a loss, no matter how early, and your feelings are absolutely valid. Let's talk about what to look for if you suspect an early miscarriage, particularly around the 5-week mark. Common early miscarriage 5 weeks symptoms can include bleeding, which might start as light spotting and progress to heavier bleeding, sometimes with clots or tissue. It can be brown, pink, or bright red. You might also experience cramping, ranging from mild period-like discomfort to more intense, persistent pain in your abdomen or lower back. For some, a sudden decrease in early pregnancy symptoms like nausea, breast tenderness, or fatigue can also be a sign. It's crucial to remember that some bleeding and cramping can be normal in early pregnancy, so don't panic, but do pay attention to your body. So, when should I go to the hospital if I'm having a miscarriage? This is a critical question. If you experience very heavy bleeding (soaking more than one sanitary pad per hour for several hours), severe, unmanageable pain, fever, chills, or any signs of infection, you should seek immediate medical attention. Even if your symptoms aren't severe, it's always best to contact your doctor or healthcare provider as soon as you suspect something is wrong. They can guide you on whether to come in for an examination, an ultrasound, or blood tests to check your hormone levels. Getting professional advice not only ensures your physical safety but also provides clarity during a confusing time. After going through such an experience, one of the hardest parts is figuring out how to stay positive after miscarriage. It's okay if you don't feel positive for a while – grief is a process, not a destination. Allow yourself to feel the sadness, anger, or emptiness. What helped me immensely was finding a supportive community and knowing who to confide in. Telling someone I had an early miscarriage to a trusted friend, partner, or family member can lift a huge weight. Consider joining online forums or local support groups where you can connect with others who understand. Therapy or counseling can also provide a safe space to process your emotions. Beyond seeking external support, focus on self-care. Gentle activities like walks, warm baths, or mindful meditation can help soothe your mind. Nourish your body with healthy food and prioritize rest. It's also meaningful to find a way to remember your baby, whether through a symbolic gesture, planting a tree, or keeping a small memento. Recovery isn't about forgetting; it's about learning to carry your grief while still finding moments of peace and hope. Remember, you are not alone in this, and healing takes time and compassion for yourself.

The white pumpkin I’ll always keep on my porch
I didn’t know what white pumpkins meant until after my miscarriage in 2018… now, every time I see one, I stop. It’s such a gentle reminder that love doesn’t end where life does. If you’ve experienced a loss like this, I hope you know your grief is valid, your love is real, and your story matters.

Two years ago today I miscarried. Although I was not far along, it was still heart wrenching. I spent the first week in complete shock and the second week crying. I was absolutely devastated. I do not know if the baby was a boy or a girl but I felt in my heart he was a boy so I named him Benito
