I'm only about 26% through with this book, but I'm excited to read the rest. I recently bought the paperback box set of the Lunar Chronicles and am so excited to read the rest of the series. Cinder was great, and the second book is off to a good start, too.
It's been a minute since I've read a 3+ book series, probably since The Selection Series by Kiera Cass. 🩵
... Read moreOkay, so after devouring Cinder, I immediately jumped into Scarlet, and wow, what a ride it's been so far! I'm still early in the book, but Marissa Meyer has done it again. The tone feels a bit different from Cinder, moving us from the futuristic bustle of New Beijing to the rustic, yet equally intriguing, French countryside. It's fascinating to see how the world expands with each book in The Lunar Chronicles, and Scarlet throws us right into a whole new adventure.
Scarlet Benoit is such a compelling protagonist. She's fierce, determined, and totally relatable in her desperate quest to find her missing grandmother. Her journey introduces us to a whole new set of mysteries and dangers, far from the royal courts and cyborg mechanics of the first book. And then there's Wolf – you know, the character everyone talks about when they mention Scarlet? He's definitely living up to the hype! The image of the red-haired woman and the black wolf on the cover perfectly captures their dynamic, hinting at the intense relationship that develops. From what I've read, his mysterious nature and ambiguous intentions are just captivating. I'm constantly trying to figure him out – is he friend or foe? His presence adds such an intense layer of intrigue to the story, making every page turn even more urgent and exciting.
What I love about Marissa Meyer's writing is how seamlessly she weaves together classic fairy tale elements with a futuristic, sci-fi twist. In Scarlet, it’s clearly a fantastic Red Riding Hood retelling, but with aliens, cyborgs, and political intrigue on a galactic scale. It’s not just a simple retelling; it’s a complete reimagining that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The pacing is fantastic, and I'm already deeply invested in Scarlet's determination and her unexpected, sometimes uneasy, alliance with Wolf as they uncover secrets. The way Meyer builds the tension and reveals character motivations is truly masterful.
For anyone who loved Cinder, Scarlet is a fantastic follow-up that absolutely broadens the scope of this universe. It deepens the lore of The Lunar Chronicles, introduces incredible new characters with their own motivations and backstories, and expands the overarching conflict with Queen Levana. I can't wait to see how Scarlet's quest unfolds and what crucial role Wolf truly plays in the grand scheme of things. If you're looking for a series that combines thrilling adventure, a touch of romance, and gripping sci-fi world-building, you absolutely need to pick up Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles. Scarlet, in particular, delivers a unique blend that stands out in the YA fantasy/sci-fi genre, offering a fresh take on a beloved tale with unforgettable characters like Scarlet and Wolf. It's definitely making my "favorite series" list!
I loved this series! I want to get the whole series in a collector’s edition!
