I have owned both an apple watch and an Oura ring. They are both fitness trackers but what is better for your mental health and relationship to fitness and exercise?? Here's my opinion.
TO BE HONEST I don't like apple watches. I used to have one and wear it everyday!! I got rid of it a few years ago.
I do believe they work well for SOME people but not all. I was someone who was addicted to the screen. I hated constantly trying to close my rings and being too addicted to the analytics. It was NOT good for my mental health, physical health, or relationship with exercise. I also hated adding ANOTHER screen to my life! I already use so many on a daily basis (iPhone, iPad, laptop, tv).
I also hate the mentality that the workout didn't count or you didn't workout if you forgot your apple watch and it wasn't recorded. Our bodies are not calculators! They are much more complex.
That is why I prefer my Oura ring. I went a few years in between wearable tech devices but have had my oura ring for a few months now and love it. I love the no screen aspect. I also love how small and minimal it is AND it looks cute with other jewelry!! I am not addicted to the analytics and it is so helpful that it is very recovery based. It has been a great addition to my life but does not control what I do. I also love that it adjusts your goals depending on your body's recovery status. This helps with not wanting to overdo it which can be such a mental battle. Highly recommend.

Beyond just counting steps or tracking workouts, the best devices offer insights that help you listen to your body's signals and optimize your daily routines for overall well-being.
From my personal experience, and what I’ve learned researching different devices, it’s clear that understanding your body's unique rhythms is key. Tools like the Oura Ring, with its focus on recovery-based data, provide valuable metrics like Heart Rate Variability (HRV), resting heart rate, and sleep stages. This data isn't just numbers; it's a guide. For example, if my readiness score is low, it’s a clear signal to ease up on intense workouts, prioritize rest, or dedicate more time to mindfulness. This kind of feedback helps me avoid burnout and supports my mental and physical recovery, especially overnight.
Speaking of recovery, many people are looking for devices that specifically help with mental and physical recovery overnight. Wearables excel here by monitoring sleep quality, duration, and even sleep disturbances. Knowing if you're getting enough deep and REM sleep can be a huge indicator of your recovery status. Devices that track skin temperature can also offer early warnings about potential illness or stress, allowing you to proactively adjust your routine. It’s all about empowering you to make informed decisions that support your overall health, rather than just pushing you to do more.
While my personal experience with the Apple Watch led to screen addiction and feeling pressured by analytics, for others, a smartwatch can be a powerful tool, especially for Apple Health integration and mental wellness. Smartwatches can serve as a central hub, consolidating data from various apps into Apple Health. You can set up discreet reminders for mindfulness exercises, log your mood, or even use guided breathing exercises directly from your wrist. The key is to customize its use so it serves your wellness goals without becoming another source of stress or constant checking of statistics.
What’s even more exciting is how wearables can complement dedicated mental wellness apps. Imagine using an app like Insight Timer for meditation and then seeing how your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) or sleep patterns are positively impacted by consistent practice. Or perhaps you use a symptom & mood tracker like Effecto. The physiological data from your wearable can provide context, helping you identify correlations between your physical state and your reported moods or symptoms. This holistic approach offers a much deeper understanding of your well-being, allowing you to manage stress and improve your mental health more effectively.
Ultimately, the goal is to find a device that enhances your life without controlling it. Whether it's a minimalist ring or a feature-rich smartwatch, the best wearable tech for mental health is one that provides actionable insights, encourages healthy habits, and helps you optimize your daily routines based on your unique body's signals, fostering a positive relationship with your fitness and overall well-being.
