My thoughts don’t mean anything

I remember this from Lesson 4, when it said, 'these thoughts do not mean anything.' But I notice that now it says “My thoughts.” Nothing has meaning unless I give it; but where did I learn to place such weight on things to begin with? What if they are not even my real thoughts, but ones that have been placed by others? What if I have been programmed from birth to believe certain ways about certain things and, until now, I have never even stopped to think otherwise?

If this is true, then “these thoughts” and “my thoughts” are not my real thoughts because they have been subtly woven into the fabric of me. But not being me, and still taking up space in my mind where they can run amuck, means that I must bring these thoughts under control. I cannot let them be the autopilot of who I am; I need my genuine self to be the one in control. Maybe this is what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote that we are to bring every thought into subjection? Because my thoughts don’t mean anything anyway—as Alan Watts said, they really are just “chatter in the skull.”

... Read moreReflecting on the concept that our thoughts may not be genuinely our own can be quite profound. From my personal experience, realizing that many of the beliefs and automatic judgments I held were not originally mine was eye-opening. Growing up, we absorb so much from our environment—parents, culture, education—that it's easy to mistake these inherited notions for personal truths. In practical terms, I found it helpful to apply the exercise mentioned in the reading from A Course in Miracles, which involves observing your thoughts without judgment and recognizing that many are just mental chatter: 'My thought about ___ does not mean anything.' This practice slowly revealed how many of my recurring thoughts were reflections of programming rather than authentic insights. Importantly, approaching this exercise with a calm and leisurely attitude made the process less daunting and more revealing. Another key takeaway is the idea that because these thoughts are not truly mine, my mind can be seen as a blank slate or an open space, ready for genuine vision. This shift in perspective helped me realize that the autopilot mode most of us operate in can be consciously overridden. Actively questioning the origin and validity of my thoughts enabled a more deliberate approach to thinking, feeling, and decision-making. Interestingly, this notion resonates with spiritual teachings such as those from the Apostle Paul about bringing every thought into subjection, suggesting a mindfulness about mental content necessary for personal growth. Alan Watts's description of thoughts as 'chatter in the skull' also rings true, emphasizing their often insignificant nature. For anyone feeling overwhelmed by persistent negative or confusing thoughts, practicing this mental separation can provide relief and clarity. It opens the door to authentic self-awareness and healing, particularly relevant for those on a recovery or self-improvement path. Remember, the goal is not to suppress thinking but to recognize which thoughts serve us and which do not, reclaiming control over the narrative running inside our minds.

Let’s say it louder for the people in the back: Jenny Humphrey was done dirty by the writers. She could’ve been one of the most complex, compelling, and relatable characters in all of Gossip Girl — but instead, they chewed her up, villainized her, and tossed her out like an old headband. Le
