They Tried to Break Me....
They Built Me Instead. They bullied me for my name… but they couldn’t touch my spirit.
In middle school, I was bullied almost every day. Not for what I did… but for who I was.
My last name didn’t match my mom’s. It carried my father’s tribe from Oklahoma.
Kids didn’t understand that they just saw ‘different.’
So I learned early.
If I wanted to feel safe, I had to protect myself.
Boxing. Karate. Discipline.
Not because I wanted to fight… but because I wanted peace.
Looking back, those years shaped my confidence.
Not because I was fearless but because I refused to stay afraid.
The girl who walked into school alone became the woman who walks into any room unshakable.

Bullying can leave deep emotional scars, especially when it targets something as personal as your identity or heritage. For many Indigenous youth, carrying a name that reflects tribal roots, such as those from Oklahoma tribes, can unfortunately become a source of misunderstanding among peers. However, these challenges often ignite a remarkable inner strength. Engaging in disciplines like boxing and karate is a powerful response — not to incite violence, but to cultivate peace, self-discipline, and confidence. Martial arts teach more than physical defense; they instill mental resilience, self-respect, and empowerment, crucial for those who endure bullying. When a young girl chooses to protect herself this way, she learns to transform fear into courage. The journey from feeling isolated to walking into a room with unshakable confidence is inspiring and relatable. It shows how embracing one's background, even if misunderstood by others, can lead to self-acceptance and pride. This transformation reflects a universal truth: the trials that attempt to break us often build our character and carve out our unique strength. Stories like these resonate in many communities, especially among Native women who rise above adversity. Sharing such experiences under hashtags like #NativeWomenRise and #IndigenousJourney creates a community of support and empowerment. It highlights not just survival but thriving with purpose, where fashion, grit, and heritage intersect to inspire others. If you or someone you know has faced bullying or discrimination, remember that these struggles can fuel growth and confidence. Embrace your story—it’s the foundation of your strength. Connecting with supportive communities online can also provide inspiration and solidarity on this journey. No matter how different you feel, your spirit is unbreakable, and your confidence, earned.
