Proud to be a 1st generation immigrant

It's funny how often I get asked, 'What exactly does being a first generation immigrant mean?' It's a question that always makes me pause because it's so much more than just a simple label. For me, and many others, a first generation immigrant is generally someone born in another country who then moves and settles in a new country, becoming a citizen or permanent resident. You're building a new life, brick by brick, often while simultaneously trying to explain your old life to people who might not understand. It can be challenging, even isolating at times, but it's also incredibly enriching. Being a first generation immigrant means having a unique perspective. You get to bridge two cultures, two worlds. You carry your roots with you, honoring the sacrifices your family might have made, and you also embrace the opportunities and experiences of your new home. There’s a constant effort to define your identity, not just for yourself but often for others as well. It's about weaving together distinct threads to create a beautiful, complex tapestry of who you are. The pride I feel in being a first generation immigrant comes from this resilience. It comes from knowing the strength it took to make this move, the hard work involved in establishing a life, and the ability to navigate different cultural landscapes.
