Habits That Make Kids Feel Love Is Earned

3/16 Edited to

... Read moreFrom my personal experience as a parent, I've learned that children truly thrive when they feel unconditionally loved rather than rewarded only for achievements. For example, when affection is given solely as a reward for 'good behavior,' children may start to associate love with performance, causing anxiety and pressure to constantly meet expectations. I noticed that praising only the results, like winning a game or getting high grades, while ignoring effort, often made my child feel inadequate if they struggled despite hard work. This reinforced the belief that love was based on success, not on their inherent worth. Also, times when I unintentionally withdrew or became emotionally distant as a form of discipline, my child seemed to interpret this as a signal that love could disappear, which led to emotional insecurity. Recognizing these habits, I shifted towards expressing affection openly and consistently, regardless of outcomes. I made a conscious effort to praise effort, resilience, and kindness rather than just victories. This helped my child feel secure and valued for who they are, not just what they do. I also worked on being emotionally available even during disciplinary moments, reinforcing that love is a constant and not something to be earned. By breaking these unconscious patterns, I saw a positive change in my child's emotional well-being and confidence. Secure love fosters secure children who understand their worth independent of performance. For parents looking to support their child's emotional security, reflecting on these habits is crucial. Shifting from a conditional reward system to unconditional love can make a profound difference in nurturing healthy, confident kids who feel truly loved for themselves.
