The funny double standard at home

We’re very quick to act like kids are being dramatic, but adults are honestly just children with bills and stronger opinions. A child makes one tiny complaint and suddenly we are giving a full TED Talk about gratitude and resilience. Meanwhile adults can deliver running commentary about traffic, waiting time, service, prices, noise, heat, and every small inconvenience in a five kilometre radius.

That’s why this is so funny. We’re not always reacting to the behaviour itself. We’re reacting to who is doing it.

When kids do it, we label it. When adults do it, we explain it away.

And the funniest part is, children are watching us the whole time. They don’t just hear what we correct. They notice what we excuse in ourselves too.

This is not a guilt post, just a very real parenting moment that makes us laugh and reflect at the same time. So now I’m curious, in your home, who really deserves the gold medal for complaining?

... Read moreFrom my own experience, I've noticed this double standard in every household setting. It's almost instinctive to dismiss a child’s feelings with a quick lecture on gratitude, resilience, or toughness whenever they say something like “I’m hungry,” “I’m tired,” or “I’m bored.” Meanwhile, adults freely voice complaints about the weather, traffic, prices, or even the noise level, often with no reprimand. What I find most fascinating is that kids are keen observers; they learn not only from what we say to them but how we behave ourselves. In my home, when my child says they feel hot or bored, I sometimes catch myself gearing up for that classic “gratitude talk,” but then I pause and reflect on my own daily grumbles about long queues or rising costs. This awareness has taught me to be more empathetic and balanced because, ironically, adults are just “children with bills and stronger opinions.” Kids aren’t allowed to complain professionally, yet adults can, and it’s accepted. This reveals an interesting psychological aspect of family dynamics where complaints serve as expressions of stress or unmet needs regardless of age. Understanding this helps me handle family conversations better by acknowledging everyone's feelings without quick judgment. Complaining itself isn’t inherently negative; it can be a call for support or change. When we excuse adult complaints but label children’s as dramatic, we risk teaching kids to suppress emotions instead of expressing them healthily. So, in our home, we’re trying to recognize complaints as important signals from everyone—kids and grown-ups alike. Ultimately, embracing this funny double standard with humor encourages us to reflect on our responses and model balanced emotional expression. It fosters a more supportive environment for the entire family, making the home a place where all feelings, from the smallest toddler complaint to adult frustrations, are treated with understanding and respect.
