Episode 3: The System Stranglehold
Kael isn’t a martyr. His memories are the only things that haven't been bleached by the dual suns of the Glass Desert. Instead of surrendering his past, he reaches for the Neural Spike—a forbidden piece of "Black-Ice" hardware he salvaged from a sunken freighter years ago.
The Digital Duel
As Kael slams the spike into the Sentinel’s access port, the world around him dissolves. He isn't standing in a forest anymore; he’s inside the Sub-Layer, a realm of pure mathematical architecture.
The Sentinel’s firewall manifests as a shifting, geometric labyrinth of obsidian glass. Every second Kael spends hacking, the "System Lockdown" meter on his HUD climbs.
"50%... 65%... 80%... Warning: Localized Reality Collapse Imminent."
The Breach
With a final, desperate burst of overclocked processing power, Kael shatters the final encryption layer. The Sentinel freezes, its visor flickering from a hostile red to a neutral, dim white.
But the victory is hollow. The hack triggered a Cascading Failure. The fiber-optic trees begin to pulse violently, their "leaves" (data packets) turning a corrupted, oily black. The "Mother Tree" terminal opens, but it’s venting supercooled coolant, and the ground beneath Kael's feet is liquifying back into toxic mercury.
The Dying Gift
Kael reaches the terminal just as the lockdown hits 99%. He can't download the full terraforming protocol—the system is deleting itself to prevent the "infection" he introduced. He only has enough bandwidth to save one file.
The terminal screen flashes three options before the hardware melts:
• A) The Blueprint: A map to a "Seed Vault" hidden on the moon (a way to start over).
• B) The Cure: A formula to purify the Glass Desert’s atmosphere immediately (a way to save the present).
• C) The Source Code: The consciousness of the AI itself (the "Mother" of the forest).
The system is flatlining. Which file does Kael grab?
