... Read moreLoving someone who has experienced trauma can often be challenging, yet deeply rewarding. The key to providing meaningful support lies in understanding how trauma affects their nervous system and emotional responses. When a person exhibits hypervigilance or seems on edge, it is not simply a behavioral choice but rather a protective mechanism their body has learned in response to past dangers. This heightened state of alertness serves to keep them safe, even if it appears exaggerated or difficult to others. In my own experience caring for a friend who struggles with trauma, I’ve noticed that triggers can arise unexpectedly from seemingly minor events. These triggers evoke strong emotional reactions that are tied not to the present moment but to memories stored deeply within their body and mind. Recognizing this helped me move away from frustration and instead offer calm reassurance, which has proven invaluable in helping regulate their nervous system. Another important thing I've learned is that these individuals often seek predictability and consistency. This isn’t about controlling situations, but about helping their body feel safe and grounded. When they need repeated reassurance, it’s not about being needy but about confirming safety in their current environment. Simple gestures like keeping routines or providing gentle reminders that they are safe can make a tremendous difference. Healing from trauma isn’t about forgetting past pain but about re-teaching the nervous system that the present is different and safe. It involves patience from both the individual and their supporters. If you’re someone supporting a loved one with trauma, remember to honor their experiences with empathy and prioritize creating a calm, secure atmosphere. Over time, these small but consistent efforts can foster resilience and emotional growth, making your relationship stronger and more fulfilling for both of you.

This has been me since age 11 and I just turned 67 on Sunday! No matter how hard we try to overcome the trauma and live our lives as a SURVIVOR there is still collateral damage. There will always be someone, be it family, friends or lovers that will never understand why we do these things and react in such a manner but they can learn a lot from this post. It’s probably the best explanation ever!❤️‍🩹❤️
