... Read moreHey everyone! I'm so excited to share more about my personal Bible study routine with you. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by where to start, or just want a fresh way to engage with Scripture, the SOAP method has been a game-changer for me. It really helps bring the ancient words of the Bible alive and applicable to my daily life. Recently, I’ve been spending time in Psalm 40, and it’s been incredibly impactful. This psalm, often attributed to David, speaks of waiting patiently for the Lord, and how He inclined His ear and heard his cry. There have been so many times in my own life where I’ve felt like I was in a 'pit of destruction' or 'miry bog,' just like David describes in Psalm 40:2. But just as the passage says, God has never left me! These verses, especially Psalm 40:1-2, are a beautiful reminder that even when things feel impossible, God is attentive and faithful. He truly heard my cry, just as He hears yours. Using the SOAP method helps me internalize these truths. Here’s a quick breakdown of how I applied it to Psalm 40:1-2: S - Scripture: I start by writing out the verses. For me, it was Psalm 40:1-2: 'I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.' Writing it down helps me focus and remember the exact wording. O - Observation: What stands out to me? I noticed David's patience ('I waited patiently') and God's active response ('he inclined to me and heard my cry,' 'He drew me up'). It's not just that God can hear, but that He does hear and *acts*. My note was, 'He heard my cry!' – emphasizing God's personal attention. A - Application: How does this apply to my life today? This is where it gets personal. Knowing God heard David's cry and helped him, I can rely on Him for help and comfort in my own struggles. It reminds me not to lose hope when waiting, but to trust that God is working, even when I can't see it. It's about remembering that 'Rely on Him for help + comfort' is always an option, and indeed, the best option. P - Prayer: Finally, I turn my observations and applications into a prayer. My prayer for these verses was, 'Lord, thank you for being with me through it all.' It’s a simple but profound expression of gratitude and trust, acknowledging His constant presence and help in my life. This method isn't just about studying; it's about connecting with God on a deeper level. It transforms a simple reading into a powerful, personal encounter. It really helps me understand 'what the Bible means to me' – it's not just an old book, but a living guide that speaks directly to my heart. I truly hope this example encourages you to pick up your Bible, perhaps even turn to Psalm 40, and try the SOAP method yourself. It’s amazing how much more richness and practical guidance you can find when you engage with Scripture this way!
