Murphy, a Navy SEAL who sacrificed his life for our country. While the full Murph is an intense feat, the 1/2 Murph offers a fantastic way to participate, honor our heroes, and push your limits, especially if you're short on time or have other commitments – like a little one in tow! My family recently completed the 1/2 Murph, and I wanted to share our experience and some tips to help you tackle it too. The full Murph consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another 1-mile run, all completed in a 20lb vest (optional). For the 1/2 Murph, you halve everything: a 0.5-mile run, 50 pull-ups, 100 push-ups, 150 squats, and a final 0.5-mile run. Don't let the numbers intimidate you! The beauty of the Murph, and especially the 1/2 Murph, is that it's scalable. We decided to 'partition' the reps, which means breaking them down into smaller sets. Instead of doing all 50 pull-ups at once, you could do 5 sets of 10 pull-ups, or even 10 sets of 5. The same goes for push-ups and squats. This makes it much more manageable and helps you maintain good form throughout. For the runs, pushing a stroller added an extra layer of challenge, but it was totally doable. If you're a parent, don't let having a baby deter you. It's a great way to get moving, and seeing those '.5 mile run' markers pass by felt like a real accomplishment. We even had moments where we walked and carried our little one for a short stretch, showing that flexibility is key to completing this challenge. Equipment-wise, a sturdy pull-up bar is essential. For push-ups and squats, you just need your body weight. Tracking your progress with a fitness tracker like an Apple Watch can be super motivating. Seeing those 'active calories' climb and the total workout duration like our 34:01 finish time really drives home your effort. The 1/2 Murph is more than just a workout; it's a mental and physical test, a chance to reflect on sacrifice, and a wonderful way to kickstart your fitness journey or maintain a healthy lifestyle.
