I just had to share about the incredible kickoff event for Black History Month at The Black Scranton Project's Center for Arts & Culture! It was such an inspiring experience, truly setting the tone for a month of reflection, education, and celebration. Seeing young ones, like 8-year-old Yn Viola, actively engaging and learning, even taking snapshots of local figures like James Luke for a special photo exhibit, truly showed the intergenerational impact of this place. It's amazing to witness history being brought to life in such an interactive way. If you haven't heard of it, The Black Scranton Project is a profound 'labor of love,' founded by the amazing Glynis Johns. Her vision is to meticulously document, case, and curate African American history in Scranton that might otherwise remain unknown. This isn't just about dusty archives; it's about making tangible the stories of the Black community that lived and thrived here, often unacknowledged in mainstream narratives. The Center for Arts & Culture serves as a vibrant, welcoming hub for this vital work, providing a space where these narratives can finally shine.
