Alice never expected to move from Oregon. When her dream of owning an antiques store becomes reality thanks to an unexpected email and a dream, she picks up her life and moves to St. Augustine, Florida. In hindsight, more research about the store and previous owner should have been advised. From the magically restocking inventory to learning she can communicate with ghosts, Alice's life has turned upside down. Things get heated when a stranger shows up demanding items from her, items which could potentially bring about the destruction of the human race.

Oh, and Death, you know, the one who's the boss of all Grim Reapers, he goes by David.

Moving to a historic town like St. Augustine adds a rich backdrop that enhances the intrigue, especially with the antiques store that seems to have a life of its own. I personally enjoy mysteries with strong midlife female characters who embark on new journeys, and Alice’s story is exactly that—a fresh start complicated by unexpected magical abilities. One of the compelling elements is how the story weaves religious aspects and supernatural entities like Death, portrayed as David, the boss of all Grim Reapers. This humanizes traditionally foreboding figures and adds depth to the mystery. The inventory that restocks on its own is a fascinating plot device, creating suspense and inviting questions about the store’s history and the powers behind it. For readers who appreciate ghost stories, the communication between Alice and spirits brings an emotional layer to the mystery, as well as tension when strangers arrive with dangerous demands. Themes of midlife transformation, the battle between good and evil, and the power of faith and magic blend seamlessly, making it a rich, engaging read. If you enjoy other cozy mysteries featuring antiques, ghosts, or supernatural detectives, this story’s unique combination of all those — plus the inclusion of reapers and a detective's touch — provides a fresh experience. The blend of mystery and fantasy elements inspired me to explore how ordinary objects can hold extraordinary secrets, and it's a great reminder that sometimes it’s never too late to chase a dream, even if it leads to the supernatural.
