Visiting or an exchange student in Hong Kong?

1/10 Edited to

... Read moreWhen living or studying in Hong Kong, managing daily expenses and navigating the city's transportation can be challenging. Based on my experience as an exchange student, I found that visiting specific affordable stores like JHC, AEON, and local markets near Hung Hom provided great deals on household and grocery items. For personal care, Lung Fung offers quality products at reasonable prices. For a tasty treat without breaking the bank, checking out bubble tea shops such as 快樂番薯, where I enjoyed two brown sugar bubble milk teas for only 20 HKD, was a delightful find. Using the right digital tools is vital. I recommend downloading transport and payment apps like MTR Mobile and Tourists Octopus Payment early on. However, be cautious about topping up the digital Octopus card directly through its app—the exchange rates are disadvantageous. Instead, topping up with cash at MTR stations and using multi-currency cards like YouTrip or Revolut helped me save significantly on currency conversion fees. Additionally, if you plan to visit Hong Kong Disneyland, seek out promotions such as the 15% discount for groups. Combining these with student discounts allowed me to get annual passes at a much lower price. Navigating shipping and shopping platforms like Taobao is smoother when you use CaiNiao kiosks for self-collection, avoiding international shipping fees. For example, the Cainiao Hub in Amsterdam facilitates efficient parcel forwarding, which can be a great option if you rely on online shopping during your stay. Overall, being informed and using these hacks not only helped me save money but also enhanced my Hong Kong exchange experience, making daily life more convenient and enjoyable.
