let’s talk about getting out of slumps🫠

there is nothing i hate more than slumps😩 especially on days i have a lot to do! i have a lot of friends who feel the same way too, so i figured we could talk about it :)

it’s like you want to get up and get things done so badly, but there is something holding you back. this is going to sound corny.. but it’s YOU! you’re holding yourself back! i hate that reminder, because i know i have the full ability to get up. it’s like my heart is telling me yes, but my mind and body are like absolutely NOT 😒

the reality is that sometimes growing up means just convincing yourself to shower and wear pants that aren't pajamas or sweatpants (or the same outfit from the day before). and as i’m sure many of you know, mental slumps only triple that struggle 🫠

in this post, i share the ways and tactics i like using the most to get out of slumps. it’s important to keep in mind that everyone is different, and what might work well for me may not work well for you! no harm in trying though, especially when you’re future self will thank you for it🙏

comment below which tactic you like most, or if you have an even more effective tactic that you use! and do you feel like you are in a mental slump right now? 🫣

... Read moreI know exactly what it feels like when you're in a slump – that heavy feeling of having no motivation, even for simple tasks. It's like your mind and body are just saying 'absolutely NOT!' despite your heart wanting to get up and be productive. Personally, I've found that understanding what a slump is, beyond just feeling tired, is the first step. From my experience, a slump isn't just about being a little unmotivated; it often means feeling groggy, spending excessive time on your phone without purpose, struggling to even get out of bed, and just not being able to complete tasks you know you need to do. It’s a temporary dip in energy and enthusiasm, and it's super common. It's important to remember it's not a permanent state and it's different from more serious psychological conditions, though it can definitely weigh you down. To help me get out of this state, I rely on a few tactics. One I've found incredibly effective is the 5-second rule. Mel Robbins talks about it – if you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea. For me, this is crucial when I'm lying in bed, dreading the day. Counting down 5-4-3-2-1 and then just throwing my legs out of bed works wonders. It bypasses the overthinking. Similarly, the 5-minutes rule is a game-changer. If a task feels overwhelming, I commit to doing it for just five minutes. Often, once I start, I realize it's not so bad, and I end up doing much more. If not, at least I did 5 minutes, and that's a win! It’s all about building momentum. Another personal tip is to romanticize small tasks. Instead of just making coffee, I turn it into a ritual. I grind the beans, set out my favorite mug, and enjoy the aroma. This makes mundane things feel intentional and enjoyable, pulling me out of the 'un-aesthetic' feeling of a slump. I also find that sometimes, imagining past situations where I felt mistreated or underestimated can light a fire under me – it's a powerful, albeit sometimes intense, motivator to prove myself. When I really need a push, I turn to motivational videos. There are so many inspiring stories out there that remind me of what I'm capable of. Sometimes, a quick YouTube search for 'how to get out of a slump' or general motivational speeches can shift my mindset enough to get going. Beyond these, I've learned that sometimes when you're feeling tired, you need a gentler approach to gain motivation. Instead of forcing myself into an intense workout, I might opt for a 15-minute walk outside. The fresh air and subtle movement can significantly boost my energy without feeling like a monumental task. Also, paying attention to hydration and a quick, healthy snack can sometimes be the small reset my body needs. Breaking bigger tasks into tiny, manageable steps and celebrating those small wins, even if it's just 'I finally folded that one pile of laundry,' helps me acknowledge progress and slowly get my mojo back. Trying these simple strategies has truly helped me navigate those dreaded slumps and get back to feeling more like myself. What works for you? I'd love to hear your tips too!
