I started a substack, and im so excited. I already have a blog, but it gets expensive, so I will be moving over to Substack and using Dropbox for all of my freebies/ printables. I feel like I will be able to show my audience more of me. My personality, updates on what I'm reading, maybe even start a book club. If you're interested in joining me sub to my substack 🔗in bio. ... Read moreHey everyone! So, you might have seen my post about moving my blog over to Substack, and I've noticed a lot of you are curious about the Lemon8 vs Substack debate. It's a question I grappled with for a while, especially as someone who loves sharing my thoughts and creative work online. Both platforms have their unique charm, but my journey led me to a clearer understanding of where each truly shines for a creator like me.
When I first started blogging, I was looking for a space to share my passions – my reading updates, personal reflections, and even some free printables. Lemon8 has been absolutely fantastic for discovering new ideas, connecting with a vibrant community, and sharing quick, visually appealing content. It's perfect for those snapshot moments, outfit inspirations, or quick tips. The algorithm is great for getting your content seen by a broad audience, and I adore the visual storytelling aspect. However, as my content evolved and I wanted to delve deeper into topics, host things like a virtual book club, or offer more extensive resources, I started feeling a bit limited. The focus on short-form, image-heavy posts, while engaging, wasn't always the best fit for the longer, more reflective pieces I wanted to write.
That's where Substack really caught my eye. For creators interested in long-form writing, newsletters, and building a direct, dedicated relationship with their readers, Substack is a game-changer. One of the biggest reasons for my switch, as I mentioned, was the cost. Running a self-hosted blog can get surprisingly expensive with domain fees, hosting, and plugins. Substack offers a streamlined, cost-effective solution, letting me focus on content creation rather than backend management.
Beyond the practicalities, Substack offers a different kind of digital environment. While Lemon8 is fantastic for broad discovery, Substack cultivates a more focused community. It feels like a space where you can genuinely slow down, read in-depth articles, and engage in thoughtful discussions. I've been thinking a lot about the idea of From Doomscrolling to Sudoku, and how we can heal our brain and attention span. Substack really aligns with that mindset. It’s less about consuming endless chaos and more about intentional engagement. It allows me to share more of my personality, deeper thoughts, and even host my book club without the visual noise or constant algorithmic pressure of other platforms.
So, how do I see Lemon8 vs Substack now? I don't think it's an 'either/or' situation, but more of a 'both/and' for different purposes. I'll continue to use Lemon8 for sharing visual highlights, quick updates, and connecting with the broader Lemon8 community. It's excellent for discovering new trends and getting quick inspiration. But for my more in-depth writing, personal reflections, book club discussions, and sharing exclusive freebies (which I'll link via Dropbox!), Substack is my chosen home. It allows me to create that quiet, focused space where I can truly connect with my readers and provide value without the distractions. If you're a creator wondering where to put your energy, consider what kind of content you want to create and what kind of community you want to build. Each platform offers a unique ecosystem, and understanding those differences can help you make the best choice for your creative journey!
