i’ve had the airpod max’s for almost an entire year now, so i think it’s time for me to give a formal review! just for perspective, i also own both the original airpods and the airpod pros!
at first, i used these all the time and they were my go to headphone. i loved them and was always picking them up. but lately…. not so much! i do feel that they are overpriced, they’re high quality but so are other headphones on the market that aren’t almost $600. the design is nice and i love the different modes, but they do get to be a little heavy after wearing them for a while.
i do love these headphones and i still use them, but my main issue with them is just the price. i highly recommend these because of the good quality of them, but at such a steep price i have a hard time suggesting others get them.

First, the positives are undeniable. The sound quality is amazing. Seriously, the audio experience is immersive, whether I'm listening to music, podcasts, or watching movies. The noise cancellation is top-tier, really allowing me to zone out, and the transparency mode is equally impressive for when I need to be aware of my surroundings. The sleek design is definitely a head-turner, and they feel incredibly premium. I also appreciate the seamless integration with my other Apple devices – the easy switch between different modes and devices is a huge convenience. The twist dial for volume is surprisingly intuitive and a joy to use, much better than fumbling for small buttons. The earcups are cushioned nicely on ears, contributing to initial comfort.
However, it’s not all sunshine and perfect sound waves. My biggest gripe, as mentioned, is the weight. While they can feel comfortable on head for shorter periods, after an hour or two, they start to feel a little heavy. I've definitely experienced them wanting to slide off my head if I lean forward or backwards, which can be annoying during workouts or even just stretching. This heaviness, combined with the often-criticized Smart Case (which doesn't offer full protection and can actually drain battery if not placed perfectly), makes them less portable than I’d like.
Then there’s the price. I still firmly believe they are overpriced. While the quality is high, it truly feels like you’re paying more for the name and the Apple ecosystem integration than for a revolutionary audio experience that justifies such a premium. I honestly think you can find a similar quality headphone for much less from other reputable brands. For example, my AirPods Pro offer fantastic sound and portability for a fraction of the cost, making them my go-to for quick trips out.
So, who are the AirPods Max for? If you're deeply entrenched in the Apple ecosystem, prioritize top-tier noise cancellation, appreciate a premium build, and don't mind the weight or the price, then you might love them. But if you’re on a budget, prioritize extreme portability, or tend to move a lot while wearing headphones, you might find yourself questioning the "worth it" factor, just like I do sometimes. They are an indulgence, a luxury item, and while I still use and enjoy them, I can't wholeheartedly say they're a must-have for everyone given all the fantastic alternatives out there.
