To #read & be enlightened about other backgrounds, evolve as a society and have access to the exchange of #ideas & #information . As a descendant of a
Holocaust survivor, I know first hand 🖐️ of what it means to survive the oppression of Nazi Germany and burning books and targeting minority writers amongst Jewish intellectuals
as well. He who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984. Now in 🇺🇸 and across the 🌎 conservatives are cracking down, on the literature and libraries of our public education system. The GOP is targeting Queer, bipoc, immigrant, and other marginalized #Authors across 🇺🇸 We must protect, sustain, & support 🆓 libraries, as well as literary mutual aids and have a upper hand in our libraries both in schools, and in the public. As we as citizens, pay taxes, and deserve to hav e our reading content to reflect the multi faceted world 🌎 we reside in. If we negate the readership of some, we control the understanding of all. If we don’t make room for all forms of education we aren’t growing as a species. History repeats itself if we don’t learn from them. 🤯 📕 📚
In my personal experience, few things have shaped my understanding of the world as profoundly as reading freely and openly. Witnessing attempts to restrict access to certain books, especially those by queer, BIPOC, and immigrant authors, feels dangerously reminiscent of history’s darkest chapters, including the book burnings under Nazi Germany. It’s a stark reminder of the words from George Orwell’s 1984 about controlling the past to control the future. Recently, I visited several local libraries that actively promote diverse collections and host community events to encourage reading and dialogue. These spaces are often the frontline defense against censorship—they embody the principles of freedom and the exchange of ideas. Supporting these libraries, whether by volunteering, donating books, or attending programs, helps sustain a culture where education reflects the complexity of our world. Moreover, free libraries and literary mutual aid groups play a critical role in empowering marginalized voices and ensuring equitable access to knowledge. For readers, having access to a rich variety of perspectives not only enlightens but fosters empathy and societal evolution. By embracing all forms of education, communities resist the dangerous repetition of history’s mistakes. The message "FREE BOOKS TAKE" visible in some library settings highlights the accessibility many still fight for. It’s more than a slogan; it’s a call to action. We must remain vigilant and proactive in protecting reading as a right for all, ensuring that censorship does not limit our collective understanding or freedom.
