In reflecting on the real historical figure of Jesus, it becomes clear how often his image has been altered to fit various narratives. Jesus, a Jew of color with Semitic features who lived in ancient Palestine, was fundamentally a radical advocate for justice and compassion. He challenged social norms and uplifted marginalized communities, embodying principles of love, inclusion, and support for the oppressed. From personal experience, I've seen how distorted representations of religious figures can impact societal attitudes and policies. When faith is used to justify exclusion or discrimination—such as denying migrants sanctuary or restricting gender-affirming care and reproductive rights—it betrays the core teachings that emphasized empathy and care for others. The phrase "JESUS NOT FASCIST, HANDS OFF! Law Like Love" resonates deeply because it calls for reclaiming faith from authoritarian misuse. True Christian values, rooted in love and equality, reject fascism and any form of oppression. In contemporary debates around social justice, gender rights, and immigration, it’s crucial to remember this perspective. By acknowledging Jesus’s background and mission, we can foster a more inclusive and compassionate society, respecting diversity and standing against rhetoric that promotes harm or exclusion. This approach enriches our understanding of spirituality and encourages actions aligned with justice and humanity.
