Jews of all Hues Matter!

As someone who has spent years learning about the vast diversity within Jewish communities, I can say that recognizing Jews of Color enriches our understanding of Jewish identity and heritage. Many people don’t realize that being Jewish transcends race or ethnicity — it’s a connection to a shared history, culture, and faith that stretches across the globe. In America, the dominant focus on Ashkenazi Jews has often overshadowed the contributions and experiences of Sephardic, Mizrahi, Ethiopian, and other Jewish groups. Growing up, I occasionally witnessed misconceptions and stereotypes about Jewish identity that failed to capture this diversity. This cultural narrowing not only marginalizes Jews of Color but also limits the broader community’s understanding of its own rich tapestry. Embracing a multicultural perspective means recognizing that Jewish traditions and practices have evolved in different regions, influenced by local languages, customs, and histories. For example, many Jews of Color maintain unique liturgical melodies, customs, and culinary traditions that differ significantly from mainstream Ashkenazi practices. They also face unique challenges such as underrepresentation and erasure in communal institutions and media. Amplifying their voices helps the modern Jewish community move beyond simplistic binaries — orthodox vs. reform, left vs. right — towards a more inclusive narrative. In my experience, engaging with organizations and communities focused on Jews of Color has been eye-opening. Their stories of resilience and adaptation highlight how Jewish identity is truly nomadic and multifaceted. This diversity is something we all benefit from acknowledging, as it fosters greater empathy, pride, and unity among Jews everywhere. Recognizing Jews of all hues matters because it honors the complexity and richness of Jewish life worldwide.
