Rocky Mountain National Park Trip

Want to go to RMNP??

Take a peek at what my trip looked like the past few days!

We camped at the Timber Creek camp ground.

You have to book a site MONTHS in advance, so get on that early. Just Google it to find the spot to reserve them!

I got recommendations for which hikes to do and checked photos of scenery on the All Trails app.

(I recommend the Bear Lake trail head. It has tons of beautiful lake hikes off it)

Make sure to check if there’s a fire ban and bring a propane stove or you’ll be in a pickle when needing to cook. We drove into the nearest town and grabbed the last one!

Bring the right gear! It was hot in the day at our camp site, freezing at night, and I was hot and cold during the hike. Layers are key!

The park is busy! So get up early and get to the trails early to avoid most people.

And HAVE FUN! 🌲🌎✨

Respect nature, enjoy the views, and don’t forget to do some star gazing at night! (We saw the Milky Way and a shooting star!!)

Rocky Mountain National Park
2024/9/2 Edited to

... Read moreContinuing my Rocky Mountain National Park adventure, I wanted to share a deeper dive into navigating its incredible paths and some extra tips I picked up along the way. While the Bear Lake Road area is popular for a reason, offering stunning lake hikes like the ones to Dream Lake and Lake Haiyaha (which were absolutely magical, especially at sunrise!), there's so much more to explore. When planning your hikes, definitely use AllTrails for research, but also check the official RMNP website for real-time trail conditions and closures. We learned the hard way that weather can change in an instant, even in summer. Always pack layers for those Rocky Mountain paths – it might start warm but get chilly or rainy quickly, especially at higher elevations. And don't forget plenty of water and snacks! Altitude sickness is no joke; take it slow and stay hydrated. One crucial tip for any path in RMNP, particularly during peak season, is to understand the park's timed entry system. This is separate from camping reservations! You need to book a timed entry permit to access certain areas, including the popular Bear Lake Road corridor, during specific hours. We made sure to reserve ours well in advance, which saved us a lot of stress. If you can't get a timed entry, entering before 9 AM or after 3 PM often bypasses the requirement, which ties back to my earlier advice about getting to trails early – trust me, it's worth it for the quieter paths and easier parking! Speaking of parking, it fills up fast. If you're tackling trails along Bear Lake Road, consider using the free shuttle system. It's super convenient and reduces congestion. We parked at the Park & Ride lot and hopped on a shuttle to get to our desired trailheads, avoiding the headache of finding a spot. This also allowed us to enjoy different paths without worrying about returning to a specific parking location. Beyond the well-known routes, don't be afraid to ask park rangers for recommendations on less-trafficked paths if you're looking for more solitude. They often have great insights into hidden gems or trails that offer unique views. Remember to practice Leave No Trace principles on every path you take: pack out everything you pack in, stay on marked trails, and give wildlife plenty of space. We saw some incredible elk and marmots, and it's vital to respect their habitat. Our time at Timber Creek campground was fantastic, but it also reinforced the need for preparedness. While we managed to grab a propane stove, having a reliable cooking setup is non-negotiable if there are fire bans. Also, consider bringing a good quality sleeping pad and bag suitable for cold nights, even in summer. The temperature swings are dramatic on these Rocky Mountain paths and at the campsites. Exploring the diverse paths of RMNP, from serene lakeside strolls to challenging mountain ascents, is an experience everyone should have. It truly felt like stepping into a postcard, especially seeing Lake Haiyaha and Dream Lake with my own eyes. Just remember to plan ahead, respect nature, and embrace the adventure!
