Why I Let My Kids Be “Too Much”

Why I Let My Kids Be “Too Much”?

Because the world will try to quiet them—at home, they deserve to be loud.

I have five kids, and honestly, they are naturally very well-behaved. They listen, they follow the rules, and they’re kind to others. But even with all that, they have moments when their energy spills over—when they get loud, wild, or emotional in ways that might seem like “too much” to some.

And here’s the thing: I don’t want to squash those moments. I don’t want to teach them to silence parts of themselves just because it’s easier for the people around them. At home, they have the freedom to express all the fullness of who they are—the messy, loud, beautiful parts that the world might try to quiet.

I want my kids to know their feelings are valid, even when they overwhelm me. I want them to trust that their voices matter, even when it’s hard to listen. Because being “too much” isn’t a flaw—it’s a sign of passion, courage, and the kind of boldness that changes the world.

Yes, freedom means they sometimes cry until they can’t breathe, dance wildly, argue fiercely, or shout with excitement. But it also means they learn how to balance that expression with kindness and respect, because they already have a strong foundation of good behavior.

By letting them be “too much,” I’m teaching them it’s okay to be themselves fully—and that includes the loud, messy parts. I believe that’s how you raise kids who aren’t afraid to stand tall, speak up, and fill the world with color and sound.

So yes, my kids are well-behaved—and yes, sometimes they’re “too much.” And I love every wild, loud, beautiful bit of it.

Do you let your kids be “too much” too? How do you celebrate their full selves? I’d love to hear your stories below. 💖

... Read moreRaising bold kids is an art that involves understanding, patience, and a willingness to embrace their unique fullness. It’s crucial for parents to maintain a nurturing environment where children feel free to express every part of themselves, including their loud and wild moments. In a world that often seeks to quiet vibrant voices, creating a safe haven at home becomes essential to their development. Encouraging your kids to be themselves could involve engaging in various forms of expressive play. This might include dance parties in the living room, outdoor playtime where they can shout and run freely, and activities that promote emotional expression, such as art or music. Such opportunities allow children to explore their emotional landscapes, helping them develop a strong sense of self. Moreover, it's essential to balance high-energy moments with lessons in empathy and respect. Teaching kids that expressing themselves doesn't mean disregarding the feelings of others will help them grow into compassionate individuals. They can learn to channel their energy appropriately, ensuring they connect with others positively while still valuing their own voices. Moreover, discussing their feelings openly can further enhance their emotional intelligence. When children are taught that it’s okay to feel big emotions and that those emotions are valid, they learn to express themselves more harmoniously in social situations—gaining skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Ultimately, allowing children to be 'too much' not only reflects a parent's acceptance of their unique personalities but also fosters resilience and courage. By letting them flourish in their noisy, messy existence, you are raising not just compliant kids but bold individuals who are ready to face the world with confidence and grace.

Will you do this to your kids?
I was spanked way too much as a child. Bare bottom with a leather belt. I’d get whipped multiple times over tiny stuff like refusing to eat my broccoli or forgetting to hang up my coat. It never felt right and I’m curious if others went through similar. Personally, I think spanking kids is wrong
