Growing up, I never fully understood the depth of cultural loss experienced during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines until I read about the destruction of Filipino literature and records written in Baybayin. It’s heartbreaking to know that entire libraries containing epic poems, historical accounts, and cultural wisdom were deliberately burned by Augustinian friars like Father Pedro Chirino, who deemed these works ‘demonic.’ What struck me most was the strategic use of these texts; while missionaries publicly destroyed them to suppress Filipino identity, they secretly studied these writings to better control political structures. This duality—destruction paired with covert preservation—created a form of cultural genocide. The friars then trained Filipino scribes to forget the ancient script and shift to Latin letters, embedding colonial influence deep into everyday communication. Despite this, some cultural preservation occurred through the creation of Spanish-Filipino dictionaries, though this was intended to facilitate colonial rule rather than genuinely honor Filipino heritage. This loss still impacts us today as many aspects of pre-colonial Filipino culture, language, and history were erased or altered. Reflecting on this, it’s important for us to recognize and revive indigenous knowledge and scripts like Baybayin. Learning about this history not only honors the resilience of Filipino culture but also challenges us to protect and celebrate what remains of our ancestral heritage. The story serves as a reminder of how powerful control over language and history can be in shaping a nation’s identity.
