🟠 Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse
The collapse of this bridge occurred in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
It's a huge tragedy that happened on the dark morning of March 26, 2024.
🔺 chronology.
• A large cargo ship called "Dali," flagged Singapore, lost control and power (blackout) shortly after leaving Baltimore Harbor.
• The Dali ship violently crashed into one of the main bunting pillars of the bridge at a speed of about 8 knots (about 15 km / h).
• The huge force of the collision broke the main bunting pole, resulting in the collapse of the entire truss bridge structure into the Patapsco River quickly within seconds.
• Six roadworks, immigrants from Latin America who were working on the bridge at the time, fell into the freezing water and died.
• Bridge landslides forced major shipping lanes into Port of Baltimore, one of the most important U.S. shipping ports, especially auto and coal imports and exports, to be closed for weeks, with estimates that total damages and claims could reach billions of U.S. dollars.
🔺 the main cause "on the part of the ship."
• A National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation has attributed the cause to a "loose wire" in the Dali ship's electrical system, which caused a power outage and lost all control before the crash.
🔺 the main cause "in respect of the bridge structure."
• Many engineering experts have noted that the bunting structure of the 1977-built bridge may not have been designed to withstand massive clashes from much larger modern cargo ships.
• Pier Protection structures, such as stone walls around pillars, may not be sufficient or obsolete for dealing with large ships like the Dali.
This became a global issue, leading to a global review of historic bridge design standards located on major shipping routes, as to whether it was time to improve the structure to support modern ship clashes.
