It Came Through My Living Room Window…
Ever had someone (or something) enter your house unexpectedly?
Yesterday I had no idea what I was going to do for a song, nothing was really coming to me. I kept listening to beats and my current thoughts and feelings but still, nothing. My son was asleep on the couch at the time and I started to hear a bit of noise coming towards me in the back room, obviously I’m thinking I’m about to see him walking in… He hadn’t moved, he was still asleep on the couch. Someone (or something) else was in the house with us.
A cat of all things (thankfully) turns the corner. Yes, a cat. A cat with a harness at that.
How the hell did a cat get in here, is my door open??? Am I tripping right now? I know I’m not tripping…
Those were the sum of my thoughts trying to understand what was happening in the moment. I realize the only logical explanation is the living room window that usually stays open. I live in an apartment complex on the 2nd floor. A cat wouldn’t be able to jump or climb up and there are no trees next to my window, the trees are across the street. Apparently my neighbor left their window open too (our windows have no screens smh) and their cat crawled out, walked over to ours and invited itself in.
The cat was no threat. It walked around meowing wanting attention, following me around and checking things out. That did wake my son up but I got him right back to sleep. I opened my door and escorted the cat out into the hall. I almost left it at that but decided to knock on my neighbors door. The cat went right to its door meowing and scratching to be let in. It seemed no one was home and I contemplated what to do next when a family of 3 turned the corner. They had no reaction at all so I kept knocking. I assumed it was a mother, father, and son.
When they got to us the mother kindly said something along the lines of “That’s okay we got it.”
I kindly respond with “Oh! This is your house?” Your cat climbed through my window.” They pretty much acted like it was a normal thing as they smiled and laughed about it, thanking me as they went in closing the door behind them. The father did seem a bit embarrassed and apologetic about it.
That cat probably be out roaming the halls and the streets often 😂
Luckily I love cats. Luckily I don’t have a dog. Luckily the cat was no harm.
I can’t remember if the owner said it was a boy or girl but the curiosity and bravery got him or her a quick adventure, and a whole song lol!
I didn’t know what song I was going to make, nothing was coming to me. But then that cat came and I just started singing about the experience. Curiosity and risk taking. Going on a quick adventure, lucky enough to meet great people along the way before you make it back home.

When that furry little adventurer suddenly appeared through my living room window, my first reaction was pure, unadulterated shock! It’s a strange feeling when your personal space is unexpectedly breached, even by something as seemingly harmless as a cat. Thankfully, this particular 'unexpected visitor' was a friendly furball, but it instantly made me reflect on apartment safety and the boundaries of our homes. This whole incident, which started with a cat in a window, truly highlighted the ins and outs of apartment living with pets. For those of us on higher floors, we often feel a false sense of security. My building doesn't have window screens, which is something I'm now seriously considering addressing. A curious pet, or in this case, a neighbor's pet exploring its 'outside world,' can easily find an open window an irresistible invitation. It's a reminder about the simple yet crucial steps pet owners can take, like ensuring all windows are securely screened or only opened slightly when a pet is nearby. And for those pets that do venture out, a visible harness or collar with ID tags is truly a lifesaver, just like the one on my temporary guest. After I gently escorted the cat out, I couldn't just leave it to wander. My immediate thought was to find its owners. Knocking on my neighbor's door felt like the natural thing to do. It got me thinking about how we can all be better neighbors and responsible community members when it comes to wandering pets. If I hadn't known where it likely belonged, I would have checked for any tags, or even posted a picture on a local community group page. Most 'lost' pets are just temporarily misplaced, and their families are often worried sick. It’s just another reflection on that initial surprising encounter. Ultimately, this whole experience, from the initial surprise and curiosity to the safe return of the cat, wasn't just a bizarre anecdote. It became a powerful catalyst for my creativity. Being stuck on a song, I was looking for inspiration, and life delivered it in the most unexpected way. It’s a wonderful reminder that sometimes, the most mundane or startling moments can spark the greatest ideas, pushing us to embrace vulnerability and find a story where we least expect it. Who knew a tiny, adventurous cat could teach me so much about life, safety, and songwriting?
