Champurado ☕️
As a busy mom, there's nothing quite like a warm, comforting drink to start the day or unwind in the evening. And when it comes to ultimate comfort, my absolute go-to is a rich, creamy champurado! If you've never tried this traditional Mexican hot chocolate, you're in for a treat. It’s thicker, richer, and more satisfying than regular hot chocolate, and it holds a special place in my heart. I often get asked how I make mine so delicious and authentic, and honestly, it all comes down to a few key ingredients and a bit of love. My recipe uses a special twist with Maria cookies that makes it incredibly smooth and adds a subtle, delightful flavor. Here's how I make my family’s favorite champurado: Ingredients You'll Need: 3 c water 2 cinnamon sticks 1 piloncillo cone (or 1/2 cup brown sugar, adjust to taste) 1 Abuelita Chocolate tablet (or other Mexican chocolate, about 3 oz) 1 can evaporated Milk (12 oz) 1 pack (about 5-6) Maria cookies (De Galletas Maria's) Additional 1 cup Milk (whole milk works best for creaminess) My Easy Champurado Steps: Start the Infusion: In a medium saucepan, combine the 3 c water, cinnamon sticks, and piloncillo. Bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the piloncillo completely dissolves. This creates a beautifully fragrant base for your champurado. Melt the Chocolate: Once the piloncillo is dissolved, reduce the heat to low and add the Abuelita Chocolate tablet. Stir continuously until the chocolate has fully melted and integrated into the water mixture. The aroma alone will make your kitchen smell amazing! Blend the Maria Magic: This is where my secret ingredient comes in! In a blender, combine the Maria cookies with the can of evaporated Milk and the additional 1 cup of Milk. Blend until the Maria cookies are completely smooth and there are no lumps. This gives your champurado an incredible texture and a hint of sweet biscuit flavor. Combine and Thicken: Carefully pour the blended Maria cookie and milk mixture into the saucepan with your chocolate and cinnamon infusion. Stir everything together well. Increase the heat to medium-low and continue to stir frequently to prevent sticking. You'll notice the champurado starting to thicken. Keep stirring until it reaches your desired consistency – I like mine rich and slightly thick, perfect for sipping. Simmer and Serve: Let the champurado simmer gently for about 5-7 minutes, allowing all the flavors to meld beautifully. Make sure not to let it boil vigorously. Remove the cinnamon sticks before serving. Pour into your favorite mugs and enjoy! My Tips for the Best Champurado: Sweetness Control: Piloncillo adds a unique flavor, but if you prefer, you can use brown sugar. Always taste and adjust the sweetness to your liking. Sometimes I add a tiny bit more sugar if my kids are drinking it. Consistency is Key: If you like your champurado thinner, you can add a bit more milk or water. For a thicker consistency, let it simmer a little longer, but be careful it doesn't get too clumpy. Frothy Top: For an extra touch, you can use a traditional molinillo (a Mexican whisk) or even a hand blender to froth the champurado just before serving. It adds a lovely airy texture on top. Serving Suggestions: Champurado is fantastic on its own, but it pairs wonderfully with pan dulce (sweet bread), churros, or even just a simple piece of toast. It's especially perfect on a cool evening or for a cozy weekend breakfast. My family loves it during holiday seasons! Making champurado is a cherished ritual for me. It’s more than just a drink; it's a taste of home and comfort that brings a smile to everyone's face. I hope you try this recipe and love it as much as we do!
