Is it too late to start a film career now?

I’ve loved movies for as long as I can remember as a kid, I used to write my own screenplays just for fun. But back then, it never felt like something people actually did for a living.

Lately though, that feeling hasn’t gone away. I keep thinking about storytelling, directing, writing and wondering what would happen if I finally went for it. I’m just not sure where to start, or if starting now would even make sense.

If anyone here has made a big career shift later on, or works in film and has advice, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Is it too late, or is 26 still early enough to chase the dream? Anyone can share some ideas?

... Read moreI totally get how you're feeling! That nagging thought, 'Is it too late?' is so common when you're considering a big career pivot, especially into something as competitive and passionate as film. But trust me, 26 is absolutely not too late to start a film career. Many incredibly successful directors and screenwriters found their stride much later in life. Think of Ang Lee, who was in his 30s before his career took off, or Kathryn Bigelow, who directed her first feature in her 30s. Your life experience is a huge asset; it gives you a unique perspective and depth for storytelling that younger filmmakers might not have yet. If you're eager to start directing at 26, my biggest piece of advice is to just start creating. You don't need a massive 'film studio scene' or expensive 'lighting equipment' right away. Begin with short films, music videos, or even compelling visual stories for social media. Use your phone or an affordable camera. The goal is to learn the language of filmmaking, understand visual storytelling, and get comfortable with 'monitors' for reviewing your shots. Online courses, workshops, and even YouTube tutorials are incredible resources for learning the technical aspects, from shot composition to basic editing. Go out and shoot, experiment, and don't be afraid to make mistakes – that's how you learn! For your 'first screenplay,' immerse yourself in the craft of writing. Read as many screenplays as you can – not just the finished films, but the actual scripts. Study story structure (Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder is a great starting point), character development, and dialogue. Write every day, even if it's just for 15 minutes. Start with an idea you're passionate about, something deeply personal or a story you feel compelled to tell. There are fantastic online communities and local writing groups where you can share your work and get constructive feedback. The key is perseverance and a willingness to revise, revise, revise. Remember, even the pros go through countless drafts. Networking is also crucial in the film industry. Connect with other aspiring filmmakers, actors, cinematographers, and editors. Collaborate on projects! Your first projects might not pay, but they build your portfolio and allow you to learn from others. Attend local film festivals, industry events, or even virtual meetups. You don't need a huge budget or a 'green screen' to showcase your talent; a well-executed short film or a polished screenplay can open doors. Most importantly, maintain your passion and belief in your stories. It's a challenging path, but immensely rewarding if you're truly dedicated. Don't let the number 26 define your dreams. Your journey is uniquely yours, and your passion for film is your strongest asset. Go chase that dream!

Hey there! I went to school for film and tv production and I’ve done some extra work and student films. I’ve been having health issues what won’t allow me to PA at the moment but I would love to as well. It’s never too late and one day we will! Also the past couple of year the industry hasn’t been great so don’t worry. Get those connections ready (this is easier said than done as I’m still working on mine as well)
