When many people suffer from a delusion, it is called religion.

... Read moreThis quote by Robert Pirsig is often cited in debates about religion, belief, and sanity. From a personal standpoint, it invites reflection on how shared beliefs can create powerful social bonds or, alternatively, lead to mass misconceptions. In everyday life, I have seen how communities rally around traditions and faith, which can offer comfort and meaning, yet also sometimes cause blind adherence to ideas without questioning. Religious belief, in many ways, functions as a social framework that helps people cope with the uncertainties of life. While one person's belief may seem irrational or delusional, when these beliefs are shared collectively, they form structured systems that guide values, behaviors, and identity. This fundamental duality between individual perception and collective experience is fascinating. From my experience attending different cultural and religious events, the communal aspect of religion often outweighs the actual dogma for many participants. The rituals, community support, and shared stories provide a sense of belonging and purpose. However, the nuance lies in recognizing when such shared beliefs enhance life or hinder critical thinking. Understanding Pirsig’s perspective encourages us to examine the line between faith and delusion carefully. It’s not a condemnation but an invitation to explore the psychology behind belief systems and how they operate across societies. This reflection is vital in a world with diverse ideologies and often conflicting worldviews. Embracing such insights helps foster tolerance and open dialogue while appreciating the complex nature of human conviction.

these essays should be required reading
I prefer essay collections to general books of nonfiction because they tend to be more accessible and way less intimidating. By breaking out a concept into easy to digest essays, the reader is able to absorb the information in their own time and can take breaks between essays until they’re ready fo
