Hi, everyone. My name is Kendra, and I'm reaching out with a hopeful heart to do something incredible for my amazing mom and other navy families.
Part of my families story:
My little brother is graduating from Navy bootcamp in Great Lakes, Illinois, and it would mean the world to her, his dad, and his girlfriend to be there. The past four years have been an unrelenting storm for my family. In 2019, we were shattered by the tragic loss of my baby god sister. She was only a year old, and her passing left a void in our lives that nothing can ever fill. The pain was unbearable, casting a long shadow of grief and depression over us all. We try to move forward, but how can you when a piece of your heart is forever frozen in that moment? Then, in 2020, my mom was in a terrible car accident. We almost lost her. By some miracle, she survived, but the accident left her with severe injuries, adding to the physical and emotional toll she was already carrying. She had already had knee replacement surgery, but the car accident made it, so she had to have major surgery. The accident took away her ability to work as a photographer, a job she loved, and we were told she may never walk again. My stepdad had to take time off to care for her, and our financial situation spiraled downward. We lost our home when our landlord raised the rent to an impossible amount during the pandemic. We were forced to move around from my grandparents til the end of school, to my mom's ex friend's house which left my mental health on edge due to the ex-friend's husband making fat and prevented comments to me at only 16 years old , which lead to my mom, my step dad and little brothers moving into a cramped apartment which was my older brothers and my uncles, and with me back living with my dad and the instability has been hard on everyone. Through all of this, my mom has remained our rock, always putting on a brave face despite the pain and heartbreak she carries. Seeing my brother graduate from Navy bootcamp would be a dream come true for her. He's heading straight to school after, so this would be the last time she'd see him until February 2026. When he left for bootcamp, it was one of the hardest days for her. Being at his graduation would mean the world to her.
Other Navy Families:
It's been incredible to connect with many other families and to se that we arent the only navy family struggling. When my mom learned about my fundraiser, she had the brilliant idea to expand our mission. Now, we're not just trying to get ourselves to graduation, but also aiming to help other Navy families make it too. I'm so grateful to be part of this community, to give back, and to embrace the Navy family spirit. We're deeply thankful for every contribution, which will help bring families together during this momentous occasion.
Anything you can contribute will help make this dream a reality. I know with my brother having his family there would also mean the world to him. In the photo, you can see my mom, my brother, and his dad on the day he left. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping us make this happen! We're so grateful for our Navy family!
My family has until September 20th to raise money, which will cover the way there, food, gas, a place to stay, and anything else they need while there. They leave September 30th and come back October 4th.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! It's been incredibly moving seeing how many families in the Great Lakes Navy bootcamp pages are struggling to afford the trip to their loved ones' graduation. Navy bootcamp graduation is a pivotal milestone that symbolizes dedication, sacrifice, and honor for service members and their families. Attending this event offers vital emotional support to graduates who have endured rigorous training and separation from their loved ones. For families facing difficult financial and personal challenges, traveling to Great Lakes, Illinois, to witness graduation can be daunting. Financial strain is common among military families, often compounded by unexpected events such as accidents, loss, or housing instability. Fundraisers and community support initiatives play a crucial role in easing these burdens and uniting families during significant life events. The spirit of the Navy community shines brightly when families come together, sharing resources and encouragement to ensure no one faces these occasions alone. Beyond emotional significance, attending a Navy graduation strengthens family bonds and provides morale boosts essential for both the service member and their relatives. This is especially important for graduates preparing to continue their education or deployments where lengthy separations are expected. By contributing to such fundraisers, donors not only help cover travel, accommodation, and meals but also affirm the value of family solidarity within the military. Your support echoes the Navy family’s resilience and commitment, celebrating their journey and honoring sacrifices made.
