We play by rules we never agreed to

Society’s just a massive cage and everyone’s acting like it’s normal. None of us asked to be born into this mess, yet we’re forced to play by rules we never agreed to. We have to work just to survive, sell our time for money, then pay taxes on that same cash. Act like our true selves? You’re “mentally ill” or “unstable.” Want to opt out? “You’re depressed, need help.” Bullshit.

And everyone accepts it. School trains you to be a compliant worker. Family pressures you to “fit in.” Jobs demand conformity. Every institution locks us into predictability, stripping our individuality. Who’s truly free? We're just pretending we’re free, ignoring the chains we’ve normalized.

I’m either numb or drowning in how messed up this is like I see through the facade no one else questions. Is there any real freedom when our choices are just what the system allows? Anyone else feel suffocated by this “normal” we’re all forced to swallow?

... Read moreMany of us feel that life is like living inside a prison, a concept echoed by the phrase "The world's a porison and we're all pretending it's fine making and label." This suggests that although society labels and defines what is acceptable, many of us internally resist and feel trapped by these invisible yet rigid constraints. From birth, we are embedded in a system that demands conformity: school prepares us to be reliable workers, family and social circles pressurize us to 'fit in,' and workplaces expect us to follow strict protocols. Our deepest desires and true selves are often suppressed because deviating leads to stigmatization—being called 'mentally ill' or labeled as 'unstable.' This duality between personal authenticity and imposed societal roles can cause profound feelings of numbness and suffocation. Moreover, the cycle of exchanging time for money, only to have that money taxed, underlines the economic chains binding us. This reality forces individuals to ask if any freedom is genuine when our choices are predetermined by societal structures designed to maintain predictability and control. Many share the sentiment of drowning in this facade, recognizing the disconnect but feeling powerless to change it. Recognizing these invisible rules and their impacts is the first step toward reclaiming our individuality. Engaging in honest dialogues about societal expectations, mental health stigmas, and economic pressures can empower us to question the status quo. Communities that encourage self-expression and challenge conformity help break these chains and foster true freedom. It's essential to find spaces where authentic selves are celebrated rather than suppressed, creating collective liberation from the 'massive cage' society often represents.

When did ‘looking good’ turn into insecurity?
I realized something this week. I wasn’t insecure. I was obedient. Obedient to rules I never consciously agreed to. • Don’t wear that until you lose weight. • Stick to what’s “flattering.” • Don’t draw attention to yourself. • Buy it smaller — motivation. • Save the good outfits for
