Budget my raise!!!

I recently got a dollar raise 🙌 as I have stepped into a new position at my job in my local county recorders office and so I was able to restructure my budget which was awesome! I bumped up what I was adding into my savings each paycheck from $100 to $150 and then I started putting $20 each paycheck into an account for my 1 year old. I also refinanced my car this past month to lower the interest rate. Doing so I was able to take 6 months off the life of the loan without changing my payment on it!! That being said I’m also paying an extra $10 each paycheck to my car loan, which doesn’t seem like a lot but when you pay biweekly, that’s an extra payment each year and an extra $10 each paycheck is another extra half payment! Crazy how so little can add up so fast in the long run!!

My husband makes more than I do so he pays the mortgage, and his car loan, and our groceries and I pay all other bills which is why you don’t see those living expenses in my breakdown, but that’s what works for us! I obviously try not to spend my remaining amount each month because unexpected expenses always come up, but I do try to budget the best I can and save the best I can!

... Read moreGetting a raise is such an exciting milestone! It feels like a pat on the back for your hard work, and suddenly, you have a little extra room in your finances. But then the big question hits: what should you actually do with that extra money? While a partaaaaaaaaay sounds tempting, making smart choices now can set you up for long-term financial success. I'm excited to share some of the things I've learned and implemented, especially with my recent raise. First off, let's talk about those tempting thoughts like blowing it all on fun or paying off every past due bill immediately. While addressing debt is crucial, and a little celebration is earned, a balanced approach is key. When I got my raise, my first thought was to adjust my budget to reflect my new income. This is where having a clear personal budget, like the spreadsheet I use, comes in handy. It helps you see your income and expenses at a glance and decide where your extra funds can make the biggest impact. One of the most impactful things you can do with a raise is prioritize debt repayment. I've been focusing on paying down my car loan, and even an extra $10 a paycheck really adds up! Think about it – that's like making an extra half payment over the year, significantly reducing interest and the life of the loan. This strategy can be applied to any high-interest debt you might have, like credit cards or student loans. You could use the 'debt snowball' method (paying off smallest debts first for motivational wins) or the 'debt avalanche' method (tackling highest interest rates first to save the most money). Reviewing your existing 'budget breakdown' and current 'expenses' can help you identify areas where you can free up funds to accelerate these payments. Next, boosting your savings is a non-negotiable. It's so easy to let that extra money disappear without a plan, but intentionally directing it into a savings account prevents that. I immediately increased my bi-weekly savings contribution. Beyond a general savings fund, consider setting up specific accounts for different goals. For example, I started a dedicated fund for my child, which feels incredibly rewarding. An emergency fund (3-6 months of living expenses) should always be a top priority. After that, you can consider saving for a down payment, retirement, or other future goals. The 'savings' category on your budget summary should always reflect your goals. Finally, while it's important to be responsible, it's also okay to enjoy a small portion of your raise. You earned it! Instead of an unplanned splurge, consider allocating a small, predetermined amount for a treat that brings you joy. This could be a nice meal out, a new item you've been wanting, or a fun experience. This approach allows you to celebrate your achievement without derailing your financial progress. Remember, the goal is financial well-being, which includes both smart planning and occasional enjoyment. Regularly reviewing your 'budget summary' can help you keep track of your progress and ensure you're allocating your new 'income' wisely across all your financial categories, from 'housing' and 'utilities' to 'entertainment' and 'insurance'.
