Living in Fujian Tulou offers a unique glimpse into traditional Chinese communal life that has endured for centuries. From personal experience visiting one of these massive earthen buildings, I was deeply impressed by the incredible construction techniques that allowed them to withstand harsh natural conditions — including being built atop swampy terrain. The walls, made from a mix of yellow earth, river sand, glutinous rice, and brown sugar, are around 1.5 meters thick and reinforced with old vine strips instead of steel bars. This organic reinforcement provides the flexibility needed to survive earthquakes without collapsing. Inside the Tulou, several families still share the space, creating a close-knit community where interactions are constant — from the ground floor communal areas to the upper-level bedrooms. The ingenious design also includes features like the "yin-yang wells" that symbolize balance and serve practical water needs, proving the ancients’ philosophical thinking. The narrow, robust main doors made from tough wood like Zyzhumwood serve as a strong defense, reflecting the historical need to protect residents from threats like bandits and toxic poisoning. The living experience is simple and traditional, with no modern air conditioning, yet the earthen walls maintain a relatively stable indoor climate. The architecture merges practicality with cultural symbolism, such as the presence of auspicious carved characters and the protection offered by motifs like turtles and fish — symbols believed to warn of water contamination. Visiting Fujian Tulou not only impresses with historical endurance but also offers lessons in sustainable and locally adapted architecture. It’s a testament to ancient wisdom that still supports vibrant community living today and continues to fascinate visitors interested in history, culture, and architecture.

How much do you know about 初九?
Today is 初九 (Chu 9) — the birthday of the Jade Emperor. Since young, as a Hokkien, I always remember this day clearly. My parents would prepare offerings late at night, light incense, and pray with sincere hearts. Back then, I simply followed along. Today, I understand it a little deeper. A l
