Hey lovelies! I've been getting so many compliments on my new locs, and I just had to share my journey with you all. I was looking for a protective style that felt light, looked natural, and gave me that gorgeous, carefree boho vibe. After some research, I decided to dive into creating my own faux locs, specifically aiming for a mix of soft, butterfly, and island locs with those beautiful, flowing curls. Trust me, it's totally doable at home, and the results are incredibly rewarding! Getting Started: Prep is Key! Before you even think about wrapping, proper hair preparation is crucial for a lasting and beautiful style. First, make sure your hair is freshly washed, deep conditioned, and thoroughly detangled. I usually blow-dry mine straight or stretch it out to make parting easier. Sectioning is next – decide on your desired loc size. I prefer medium-sized locs, so I create neat square or brick-lay parts. Having clean parts makes the whole process smoother and ensures your locs lay beautifully. Choosing Your Hair & Tools (Including My Secret Weapon!) For these styles, the type of hair you use makes all the difference! For the 'butterfly' effect, you'll want some water wave or deep wave crochet hair – the messier, more undone texture is what gives it that signature look. For 'soft locs,' pre-stretched braiding hair (like the 2X REBEL brand I used for its lightweight feel!) and a softer, synthetic wrapping hair are perfect. And for those 'island locs with curls,' you can even incorporate some human hair bundles for added curl definition and longevity at the ends. Don't forget your essential tools: a good rat-tail comb for parting, strong braiding hair (like a quality pre-stretched kind), a crochet needle, a styling gel/mousse to keep things neat, and yes, a little super glue for sealing the ends if you're like me and want extra security! Creating the Magic: Steps for Butterfly, Soft, and Island Locs Foundation Braids: Starting with a small section of your natural hair, braid it down about an inch or two. This forms the base for your faux loc. You can use a bit of your chosen braiding hair to extend your natural braid if your hair is very short or fine. Attaching the Crochet Loc: Now, take a pre-made crochet loc (or a strand of your chosen water wave/braiding hair if you're creating the 'faux loc' from scratch). Using your crochet needle, loop it through the base of your braid. Make sure it's secure! Wrapping for Texture: This is where the magic happens for butterfly and soft locs! Take your wrapping hair (e.g., more water wave hair for butterfly, or soft synthetic braiding hair for soft locs) and begin wrapping it tightly around the base of the attached crochet loc and your natural braid. As you wrap down the loc, for a *butterfly effect*, you'll occasionally pull out small loops of the wrapping hair to create those signature 'distressed' or 'messy' loops. For *soft locs*, focus on a smooth, consistent wrap that keeps the loc feeling pliable and light. For *island locs*, you might wrap down most of the way, leaving the ends loose and curly, or incorporate small sections of pre-curled hair as you wrap. Adding Curls: To get those beautiful curls, you have a few options. You can use pre-curled crochet hair that already has curls attached to the locs. Or, as you wrap, you can leave sections of loose, curly hair (like water wave or deep wave hair) un-wrapped at various points along the loc, or specifically at the ends. This gives that gorgeous, natural-looking curly dimension that everyone loves! Sealing the Ends: Once you reach your desired length, wrap the hair tightly to the end. You can either secure it by burning the ends (be super careful!) or, my preferred method for a clean finish, a tiny dab of super glue on the very tip to prevent unraveling. This makes them last longer! Styling Your New Locs: Updo Ideas & More! One of the best things about these locs is their versatility! For easy 'updo styles,' you can sweep them into a high ponytail or bun, leaving some tendrils out around your face for a softer look. Half-up, half-down styles also look stunning. Don't be afraid to experiment with braids within your locs or accessorize with beads and cuffs. A light mousse or setting spray can help keep frizz at bay around your parts and refresh your curls. Final Thoughts: Doing these locs yourself is such a rewarding experience. It takes time and patience, but the confidence boost you get from rocking a beautiful, protective style that you created is unmatched.
