First train ride ! To Chicago

2025/6/27 Edited to

... Read moreTaking the train to Chicago for the very first time was an absolute adventure, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a relaxing way to travel! For my trip, I departed from the historic Amtrak Station in St. Louis, MO, and the whole experience was surprisingly smooth. If you're wondering, 'Can you take a train to Chicago?' – the answer is a resounding yes, and it's fantastic! Booking my Amtrak tickets was straightforward online. I always recommend booking a bit in advance, especially for popular routes like St. Louis to Chicago, to snag the best fares. There are different seating options, from coach to business class, so you can choose what suits your comfort and budget. I opted for a window seat in coach, which was incredibly spacious compared to airplane economy! Upon arrival at the Amtrak Station in St. Louis, MO, I found it easy to navigate. Make sure to arrive about 30-45 minutes before departure to give yourself enough time to find your gate and settle in. The staff were super helpful, answering all my first-timer questions. The train ride itself was a highlight. There’s something so nostalgic and calming about watching the American landscape unfold outside your window without the stress of driving. I saw charming small towns, vast farmlands, and beautiful natural scenery. Unlike flying, you have the freedom to get up, stretch your legs, and even walk to the observation car or dining car. I loved grabbing a snack and just enjoying the views. The Wi-Fi on board was decent, allowing me to catch up on some reading and even stream a little. For anyone considering a train ride to Chicago, here are a few personal tips: Pack Smart: Bring snacks and drinks, although there's a cafe car. Don't forget a book, headphones, and a portable charger. Comfort is Key: Dress in layers as the temperature on the train can vary. A neck pillow can be a lifesaver for longer journeys. Enjoy the Journey: Let go of the rush. Train travel is about the experience as much as the destination. When you arrive, Amtrak trains typically pull into Chicago Union Station, a stunning architectural marvel right in the heart of the city. From there, it's incredibly easy to connect to public transport (CTA 'L' trains and buses) to get to your accommodation or start exploring immediately. My first weekend in Chicago was packed with discoveries. The Chicago Riverwalk was even more beautiful than I imagined, offering fantastic views of the city's iconic architecture. Whether you're planning to visit museums, explore vibrant neighborhoods, or just enjoy the city's incredible food scene, taking the train to Chicago is a fantastic way to kick off your adventure. It truly lets you relax into the journey and arrive refreshed, ready to dive into everything the Windy City has to offer. I'm already planning my next train trip!
