Nagano City is the current capital of Nagano Prefecture, and Zenkoji Temple became the core of the development of Nagano City.
Zenkoji Temple is said to have been built from the end of the 7th century to the beginning of the 8th century, and prospered as a center of faith, especially after the Heian period. As a temple town of Zenkoji, a town and a post station for worshipers were formed, which became the prototype of the current Nagano City.

It is famous as' a temple for worshiping all people 'that is not bound by any sect (although it is known as a non-sectarian temple, priests of the Jodo and Tendai sects are sometimes involved in the management).
It is said that worshipers can go to paradise by visiting Zenkoji Temple while they are alive.
Honzon Ikko Sanzon Amida Nyorai (Hidden Buddha, usually closed to the public)
It is said to be a statue of Amida Nyorai that came from India and is one of the oldest Amida statues in Japan.
During the Edo period, "Gokaicho" began to be held regularly. Currently, the main image of Buddha is unveiled to the public once every seven years, and many worshipers visit.
Tour of Kaidan: Walk through the underground corridor in the dark and touch the lock under the principal image.

Another name: Kaizu-jo Castle
It is also known as a castle that the predecessor of the Sanada clan, a vassal of Shingen Takeda, was involved in. It was originally built as a flat castle for defense, and has a moat and earthen walls around it.
It was developed as the domain office of the Matsushiro Domain, and the Sanada clan lived as the lord of the domain. Many of the stone walls and moats that remain today were developed during this period.

善光寺観光って「お参りして終わり」になりがちだけど、周辺までセットにすると旅の満足度が一気に上がりました。私が回ってみて便利だったのは、【長野駅→善光寺→周辺スポット】の流れで歩く（または途中だけバス）プラン。長野駅から善光寺までは真っすぐ行けるので、街並みを見ながらの移動が楽しいです。道中は門前町らしい雰囲気で、お土産屋さんやカフェが点在していて「善光寺周辺っぽさ」を一番感じられる区間でした。 善光寺に着いたら、まずは山門〜本堂周辺の空気感を味わうのがおすすめ。参拝者が多い日でも境内が広いので、少し端に寄るだけで落ち着いて手を合わせられました。時間が取れるなら「戒壇めぐり」もぜひ。暗闇の回廊を手探りで進む体験は想像以上に非日常で、観光というより“体験”として記憶に残ります。 善光寺周辺観光で相性が良かったのが、近くの長野県立美術館。お寺の厳かな空気から一転して、ガラス張りのモダン建築と光の入り方が気持ちよくて、歩き疲れた頭がリセットされる感じでした。展示内容も「信州らしさ」と現代アートが混ざっていて、雨の日のプランにも入れやすいです。 「善光寺以外も見たい」「歴史成分を足したい」なら、松代エリア（真田宝物館・松代城跡）を組み合わせると満足度高め。城跡の石垣や堀を見ると、長野市ってお寺だけじゃなく城下・藩の歴史も濃いんだなと実感しました。春は桜が映える場所もあって、日本景色を撮りたい人にも向きます。 家族連れや動物好きなら、長野市茶臼山動物園も候補。私はウォンバット目当てで行ったんですが、思った以上に近い距離で見られてテンション上がりました。善光寺観光の“渋さ”に、動物園の癒しを足すとバランスが良いです。 最後に、時期が合うなら素桜神社の神代桜は本気でおすすめ。樹齢1,200年の迫力がすごくて、写真で見るより現地の存在感が段違いでした。善光寺周辺だけでも十分楽しいけど、少し足を延ばせるなら「長野市の春」を回収できるスポットだと思います。 まとめると、善光寺周辺は「参拝＋街並み散策＋美術館（or 歴史スポット）」の組み合わせが強いです。長野駅周辺に戻ってご飯やお土産に寄れるのも動きやすいポイント。予定が半日でも1日でも、無理なく“善光寺観光おすすめ”を詰め込めました。
