Your Body Remembers What Your Mind Avoids

I used to believe emotional reactions meant something was “wrong” with me.

This book helped me see it differently.

What we avoid feeling doesn’t disappear.

It finds another way to be expressed — often through the body.

The Body Keeps the Score explains this with compassion, not blame.

It changed how I interpret my reactions, my pauses, and my sensitivity.

Understanding comes before healing.

This book is linked for anyone wanting to understand themselves more deeply.

... Read moreFrom my experience, emotional awareness is a journey that often goes beyond what the mind can immediately grasp. The idea that "Your Body Remembers What Your Mind Avoids" resonates deeply because it explains why sometimes, despite knowing something logically, our bodies react with tension or discomfort that feels disconnected from the present moment. For example, I have noticed a tightness in my chest or subtle urges to pull away in social situations where no clear threat exists. At first, this was confusing, and I wrongly thought it meant something was "wrong" with me. Learning about how trauma and early experiences imprint on our nervous system helped me reframe these reactions as stored memories rather than failures. "The Body Keeps the Score" offers a compassionate lens—reminding us that emotional pain doesn’t vanish simply because it’s unspoken; it often manifests physically before language or conscious understanding arrives. This awareness encouraged me to pay attention to bodily signals without judgment, which in turn led to better self-understanding and emotional healing. In practice, mindfulness and body-centered therapies such as breathwork or gentle movement have been crucial. They help create safety in the body, allowing stored trauma to surface in a manageable way. Noticing moments when my body 'speaks before my thoughts do,' as the book suggests, opened a new path toward healing that I hadn't encountered through talk therapy alone. Sharing this experience might encourage others struggling with unexplained emotional reactions to seek resources that embrace the mind-body connection. Healing is not about blaming yourself for sensitive responses but about recognizing their origins and giving yourself the space to heal holistically.
