Lithops/Living Stones

Lithops are a flowering African succulent plants found in various regions of Africa, mostly arid and rock spots. There are multiple known species in the hobby from natural to hybrid species. So much so these plants have Coleman numbers to accompany their scientific names.

Lithops or living stones are a mimicry two leaf plant that evolved to copy stones to avoid being eaten by would be predators.

They thrive in direct to indirect sunlight with a gritty fast draining soil. 70% inorganic to 30% organic. The tricky part is water consumption and if you're not attentive you can end up killing them especially during the leaf split. Where you should stop watering and allow the plant to absorb their water stores.

You also have to take into account the seasons. During the summer you should reduce waterings because they will shut down until tempures become suitable.

Show are 3 different species the larger set are of the same species and the two smaller ones juveniles and those are of two different species.

... Read moreIt's truly fascinating how Lithops, my beloved Living Stones, have evolved to perfectly camouflage themselves in their natural rocky habitats. When you get a real close-up look, it's astonishing to see the intricate patterns and colors that make them practically indistinguishable from the pebbles and stones around them. This mimicry isn't just for show; it's a survival strategy to avoid being eaten by predators in their native African arid landscapes. I've spent countless hours admiring the unique 'windows' on top of some of my Lithops. These translucent areas allow light to penetrate deep into the plant, enabling photosynthesis while the majority of the plant remains safely buried beneath the soil surface, further enhancing their 'living stone' illusion. Each species has its own distinctive pattern – some have intricate networks of lines, others feature speckles, and some boast bold, striking markings. For instance, I have a Lithops aucampiae (which I believe might be similar to the 'AUOAMPIAE Glaquajaun' mentioned on one of my plant tags!) whose rich reddish-brown hues and unique top patterns are just mesmerizing up close. When I started my Lithops collection, I was drawn to the sheer diversity of their appearance. There are so many varieties with different shades of green, gray, brown, and even purple. It’s like collecting tiny, living jewels! To truly appreciate them, I often use a magnifying glass to examine the fine details on their surfaces. You'll notice how the patterns change slightly as they grow, and during the leaf split, the old leaves shrivel to reveal a fresh, new set of 'stones' underneath, often with even more vibrant or refined patterns. Creating the right environment for them also helps bring out their best features. I always ensure they're potted in a gritty, fast-draining soil mix – typically 70% inorganic to 30% organic. This mimics their natural stony environment and prevents issues like rot, which can quickly diminish their beauty. Pairing them with colorful pebbles and stones in their pots not only enhances their camouflage but also makes for a stunning display that highlights their natural artistry. It's a joy to curate a small desert landscape right on my windowsill! Watering is, of course, the trickiest part, but getting it right means your Lithops will thrive and showcase their vibrant patterns. I've learned to be extremely attentive to their cycles, completely stopping watering during the leaf split and reducing it significantly in summer when they go dormant. This careful approach ensures they can fully absorb the moisture from their old leaves, resulting in plump, healthy new 'stones' with crisp, defined patterns. It's truly a labor of love, but the reward of seeing these little masters of disguise flourishing in my collection is immeasurable.
