as a new student there is so much to remember and figure out so hopefully these hacks will make your life just a little bit easier heading into college.
the hacks that I recommend the MOST would be
- putting all your deadlines into one calendar
this really is such a life saver and makes staying organized so so so much easier. this also avoids those last minute freaks out when you forget about an exam or quiz, everything is in your calendar!
- never buy the textbook BEFORE the class starts, you have a chance to save some money here! if the books is truly required you can look for online PDF versions, borrow from an upperclassman or even find it available for rent! this way you don’t have to buy all your textbooks!
- sit near the front and make eye contact
having a relationship with your professor makes your life 10x easier. professors are there because they are passionate about what they are teaching so when they see students have that same passion they immediately want to help!
... Read moreHey everyone! So glad you found my tips on surviving college. But let's be real, there's always more to learn when you're navigating university life! After getting through my first year, I realized there are even more 'aha!' moments I wish I could share. Here are some extra tricks that seriously helped me, and I bet they'll help you too.
First, let's talk more about that calendar hack. Seriously, put everything in there – not just assignment due dates, but also office hours, club meetings, and even your workout schedule. I personally love using Google Calendar because I can color-code my classes and commitments, and set multiple reminders. It's a game-changer for avoiding those dreaded 'oops, that was due today?!' moments. You can even add your syllabus items to Notion for a more visual project management approach!
And about textbooks, I can't stress this enough: always explore alternatives before hitting 'buy new.' Beyond borrowing from upperclassmen, check your university library's reserves – often they have copies you can rent or use in-library. My friend and I often looked for online PDF versions or international editions, which were much cheaper. Sites like Chegg or Amazon also offer textbook rentals for a fraction of the price too. Sometimes, we even split the cost of an e-book!
Now, for something I learned the hard way: utilize your library's databases! My professors loved it when I cited scholarly articles, and honestly, finding legit sources through Google can be a nightmare. Library databases (like JSTOR, PubMed, or academic search engines specific to your field) are goldmines for credible information. Don't be afraid to ask a librarian for help – they are experts and can show you how to navigate them effectively. It makes research papers so much easier and your arguments stronger.
Another huge one: visit professor office hours early! I used to think office hours were only for when you were completely lost or failing. But I quickly realized they're for *everyone*. Going early in the semester, even if just to introduce yourself or ask a quick question, helps build a rapport. Professors notice students who show initiative and genuine interest. This can lead to clearer understanding of complex topics, better grades, and even opportunities like research positions or strong letters of recommendation later on. It’s a small effort with a big payoff.
Finally, don't forget about campus resources. Your university isn't just about classes! There's usually a writing center that can help you with essays, tutoring services for tough subjects, and career services to help you build a resume or find internships. I wish I'd used the writing center more for feedback on my papers before submitting them – it's like having a personal editor! Take advantage of these; they're often included in your tuition.
Balancing academics with a social life and self-care is tough, but these hacks can make it manageable. Remember to prioritize your sleep, eat well, and find ways to de-stress. College is an amazing journey, and with a few smart strategies, you can make the most of it!
These are great tips for college! I definitely did a few of these during college and wish I knew the textbook one sooner
