Are you still paying for children’s books? 🤔

Dolly Parton is a world-wide program that sends 🆓 books to children each month until age 5. I enrolled my daughter in December and received the first book in January (Of course, it was one of my favorites). I used this book to teach sorting. I read the book to my daughter and then had her place the teddy bears on the correct color. Although I used this book for math, I also hit on some literacy skills by following the reading tips recommended. I asked questions about the book and pointed out objects (that I knew she was familiar with) to help guide her learning. I’m looking forward to February’s book next week. Let’s make reading fun for children again.

... Read moreWhen I first heard about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, I honestly thought it sounded too good to be true. Free books, delivered right to our doorstep every month? Yes, please! It's truly a fantastic program that every parent should know about. For ages birth to five, children receive a brand new, high-quality book each month, completely free of charge. It’s been such a blessing for our family, and I wanted to share more about how you can get involved and make the most of these wonderful resources. So, how do you get these amazing free books? The process is surprisingly simple! Head over to the Imagination Library website and enter your address. They'll tell you if the program is available in your area. Dolly Parton funds the national scope, but local partners are key to making it happen in communities. If it's not available yet, you can often sign up for notifications or even inquire about starting a local program. It took a couple of months from signing up to receiving our first book, 'The Little Engine That Could,' but it was well worth the wait! Beyond the obvious benefit of not paying for children's books, the Imagination Library offers so much more. It fosters a love for reading from an early age, helps build a home library, and promotes early literacy skills. For us, receiving a new book each month creates so much excitement and anticipation. It’s a dedicated time for bonding and discovery. These books are carefully selected for age-appropriateness, ensuring they are engaging and educational, often even including 'READING TIPS FOR SHARING BOOKS WITH YOUR CHILD' right on the inside cover, which I find incredibly helpful. Our first book, 'The Little Engine That Could,' became an instant favorite. I loved the idea from the article about using it for sorting activities. We grabbed our colorful bear-shaped manipulatives and practiced matching colors to a DIY colorful paper train. It’s not just about reading the words; it’s about bringing the story to life! You can extend the learning by asking open-ended questions like 'What do you think happens next?' or 'How does the little engine feel?' The images showed how these activities promote 'matching, sorting, color identification, and fine motor skills,' and these books are perfect for incorporating those concepts. You can also create storytelling prompts based on the characters or themes. For example, after reading 'The Little Engine That Could,' we talked about perseverance and helping others. Don't just read the book once and put it away! Revisit it often. Use different voices for characters, point out new details each time, and connect the story to your child's own experiences. The 'READING TIPS FOR SHARING BOOKS WITH YOUR CHILD' often suggest activities for different age groups, from pointing at pictures for toddlers to discussing themes with preschoolers. Building a home library with these high-quality, free books is an incredible gift. So, if you're keen to enrich your child's early learning journey without breaking the bank, definitely look into Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. It's truly a program that keeps on giving!
