Family vs free labor 💆‍♀️

I run my own massage therapy business—it’s my full-time job and how I pay my bills. During a family dinner, my brother-in-law asked if I could just “give him a quick massage.” I laughed it off and told him he could book a session with me.

He got offended and said family should get freebies. My sister backed him up, saying I should’ve just done it because it “doesn’t cost me anything.” But it does—my time, my energy, and years of training. If I gave free massages every time family asked, I’d be working for nothing.

Now they’re calling me stingy, but I honestly don’t think I was wrong for setting a boundary. Would you have done it, or told them to book like I did?

... Read moreRunning a massage therapy business requires significant dedication, professional training, and careful management of time and resources. While it’s natural for family members to expect favors, such as free massages, it’s important to recognize that these services are not merely casual acts of kindness but valuable work that sustains a livelihood. Offering free massages to family can unintentionally diminish the value of your professional skills and set a precedent that can be hard to maintain. Many self-employed professionals face similar situations where loved ones assume their services should be free or discounted simply because of family ties. However, these requests overlook the costs involved: years of education and certification, continuous skill improvement, and the daily physical and mental effort required to provide quality care. Boundaries in such cases are essential, not just to preserve income but also to maintain fairness and respect for the profession. Communicating clearly about these boundaries—such as suggesting family members book appointments like any other client—helps prevent misunderstandings and preserves personal and business relationships. It’s perfectly reasonable to balance goodwill with professionalism by occasionally offering discounted sessions as a thoughtful gesture rather than free services as an expectation. Ultimately, valuing your time and skills encourages others to do the same and supports the sustainability of your business. This discussion resonates across many service-based professions, highlighting the importance of setting boundaries, valuing professional work, and managing expectations, especially with loved ones. If ever in doubt, remember that protecting your business integrity and well-being benefits both you and those who rely on your expertise.

I love your boundaries, but I know I wouldn't have had the stones to hold it. I'm so proud of you though!

Good for you! No reason you’re obligated to do that. What’s his job? Is he offering you freebies in return? I’m all for reciprocating and helping loved ones but massages take a lot of energy (physical, spiritually, mentally).
