Nursing school is far from easy, but if you’re just starting out or thinking of becoming a nurse, welcome! As a current nursing student, I want to share some tips with you that I have learned along the way.
🩺 Let’s talk supplies!
You may be tempted to buy all these fun supplies, but in reality you will never touch them. All you’ll need for lecture are some folders, pens, notebooks and a planner. For clinicals you will need a stethoscope, a pen light, comfy shoes, and a second hand watch. I would see what your school provides and requires before buying anything!
🩺 Find how you study best!
✨Mind Maps: if you’re a visual learner, mind maps could work for you! Start by writing a word in the center of a blank page. After that, write major ideas and keywords and connect them directly to the central concept. Other related ideas will continue to branch out. Mind maps are proven to help reading comprehension.
✨Pomodoro Technique: This way of studying is a time management method based on 25-minute stretches of focused work broken by five-minute breaks. First, focus on what you want to study. Next you’ll want to set a 25 minute timer and work on the task until the timer is up. Once the timer is up take a 5 minute break and for every 4 pomodors, take a longer break 15-20 minute break!
✨Active Recall: This technique is my go-to. Active recall involves taking a topic, creating questions based on that topic, and then repeatedly testing yourself on those questions. By forcing your brain to retrieve the information, it ensures that you actively learn it instead of passively reading it.
🩺 One of the most important pieces of advice I can give is to not compare yourself to others. After exams everyone is going to talk about their grades. It’s extremely upsetting when I’m proud of a grade that I got and someone else who did better than I did complains how they wish they did better. Nursing school is not a competition! We are all here for the same thing. In the end, your grades do not define you as a nurse.
🩺 Finally, don’t forget to take breaks. You’re doing something very stressful, you deserve to take time for yourself too!
