Haiti our beautiful country, forever in our hearts

My journey to the Citadel Laferrière was an adventure in itself, truly giving me a sense of the incredible landscape Haiti offers. I opted for the classic horseback ride up the winding dirt path, just like I saw in some pictures. The lush green mountains stretched endlessly around me, and the fresh air was invigorating. As we ascended, the sheer size of the Citadel began to reveal itself, a truly panoramic view slowly unfolding with every turn. Reaching the summit, the views were absolutely breathtaking. It’s hard to describe the feeling of standing atop this colossal fortress, gazing out over what feels like a bird's-eye or even an aerial view of northern Haiti. The vibrant green of the foliage below, the distant hints of other settlements, and the vast expanse of the sky made for an unforgettable vista. This isn't just a building; it's an experience that connects you deeply with the country's spirit. You can truly appreciate why it was built here, commanding such an incredible vantage point. Inside the Citadel, the scale is just as impressive. Walking through its massive walls, some over 40 meters high, and seeing the thousands of cannonballs still stored, you can almost hear the echoes of its past. It's a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the Haitian people. The construction with lime, sand, stone, and even the legendary ox blood for reinforcement, speaks volumes about the commitment to its solidity and defense. Beyond the Citadel itself, the surrounding region offers glimpses into authentic Haitian life. As I traveled, I noticed charming, vibrant green wooden houses nestled among the foliage, and even some rustic wooden shacks that embody the simple, natural settings depicted in many local scenes. The general landscape is so rich and alive, with palm trees and tropical plants adding to its unique charm. It makes you realize that Haiti is much more than just its famous landmarks; it's a tapestry of natural beauty and resilient communities. And of course, no trip to Haiti is complete without experiencing its delicious cuisine! After a day of exploring, I savored some traditional Haitian food – the rice and beans with stewed meat and fried plantains were incredibly satisfying. I even tried some local snacks, and saw corn on the cob being roasted, similar to what I’d seen in photos. It's a wonderful way to connect with the local culture. While my focus was on the mountainous grandeur of the Citadel, I've heard so much about Haiti's diverse beauty, from these incredible fortresses to stunning coastal areas like Aquin, promising even more adventures for future visits. This journey really cemented my love for Haiti, a country that truly lives up to its reputation as a beautiful nation, forever in our hearts.
